Is It Better That The Bears Just Lose Out?

There is always this question that faces teams as the end of the season comes around and you have been forced out of the playoffs.  Do you try to win your last few games or do you not put full effort and try to up your draft spot.

I am of the side that you as Herm would say "You  play to win the game!".  I don't like a team to give up, it is not the mentality that as a coach I would want.  I do understand if you sit players who have been playing hurt all season and give them an early start on healing or getting some newer guys in to see what you have in them, but I wouldn't sit people just to up my draft spot.

That in mind, what happens if say the Bears win the next two games in let us just say convincing fashion.  Maybe Orton averages 275 yards, 2TDs and 1INT.  Is this bad for the Bears?  Does it create false hope?  Would you then be worried that the Bears  might not address the QB spot if Orton shows signs of being a good QB?

Would it be best for the Bears to lose and for Orton to continue to be bad and Peterson continue to be mediocre, so that the Bears have no choice, but to address the positions in the offseason?

Lose
We all know what this team is capable of.  We saw it last year.  We all know that this team sucks this year, for a whole lot of reasons.  Orton showed what most of us already knew, he's a #3.  I don't care that he hasn't played since 2005.  He looked the exact same as he did in 2005.

As for Peterson, i don't know.  He's a very reliable receiving threat out of the backfield, but until we fix the O-line, it doesn't matter about the running game.  I think before he got injured, Benson was looking good.  Get him a fixed O-line and another shot at showing what he's got.  Maybe see what's out there in F.A.

For all the Rex haters, he's the best QB we have and i think that's pretty obvious with what Griese and Orton have shown.  I was at the Skins vs. Bears game and when he got hurt, I knew the season was over.  Griese and Orton just can't make the throws that Rex can.  If you fix the O-line, maybe pick up a RB in F.A., and get a new O.C., please, then this offense could be very good.

The defense, again, suffered through injuries this year.  I think the D-line is set if they can stay healthy.  They are undersized so I would like to see a bigger DT to compliment Harris.  Keep Alex Brown because he's better than Anderson, Anderson needs to go back to last year's role.  If we lose Briggs, huge hole at linebacker.  I would like to see us address this in F.A. or the draft.  There is alot of talent at LB this year in the draft.  Corners are set, maybe get some depth but safties are horrible.  Without Brown, this D is just not very good.  Manning and Arch suck ass.  This is a definite need.  Urlacher is still a beast but he can't do it all like he used to.

This is just my $.02 so take it how you will.  I'm just really disappointed in this team this year and just hope that they can rebound and come out next year looking like we thought they would this year.

So just expounding on that
if say we sign Grossman and his our starter and we address the Oline and bring in somebody like Chester Taylor, would you be ok with that lineup?

by Adam T on Dec 18, 2007 1:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You know what
I live in the Baltimore area, and I got to see Taylor play a lot.  He was a beast when he was spelling Lewis, even during the season when Lewis rushed for over 2,000.  I would definitely like to see him in a Bears uniform.  Have Benson spell Taylor and I think that's a pretty good backfield.  But we absolutely need to fix the O-line first.  I like Rex a lot and have always supported him so yeah, i think we should resign him.  So, yeah, i'd be more than OK with that lineup.

Wasn't finished
Sorry, so to answer the question, i think we should lose out and try to get a good draft pick and maybe trade it to get some more picks.  We have alot of holes.

I do agree with part of that latter part.
If they can't get one of the three good QB prospects, I wouldn't mind them trading the pick for more upper-level picks. I'm just really pissed right now at Angelo for the O-line situation. I know they cut ties with Colombo because he was hurt, but that was too early. Having Colombo and Steinbach right now would have really made this season (and the following off-season) a lot easier.

Sign McNabb & Turner
Only problem is why would anyone in their right mind sign with team with such a crap-ass offensive line?

by phastphil on Dec 18, 2007 1:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

SIgn...
Alan Faneca from Pittsburgh.   My Steeler-fan friend says he's pissed cause Pitt wouldn't extend him before the season so he's likely to test the FA waters.

Um, McNabb is prone to injury
and would require a lot of pay.  At least find one of the two, not both.  Very little bang for the buck, I ain't on the McNabb train that everyone else is on.
I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus

Play to win.
First, I don't know any player that would sit out quietly so a team can lose.

Like you, though, Adam, I think you try to not play any player that is even slightly injured. Fatigue and current injuries are the two biggest things that lead to future/worse injuries. (Obviously, after following luck.)

I'd like Orton to play well so that they can keep from re-signing Grossman. That would be the biggest mistake of this franchise. Fact is, drafting a QB is a must. Anyone who thinks Grossman is a reliable starter on a non-luck team (unlike 2006) is mistaken. That said, they can't keep Griese, Grossman and Orton. One has to go.

Orton is cheap and still has a "chance" to be a capable place-holder. (Grossman was bad when he first started, too, guys, why doesn't Orton get the same chance? If Grossman's struggles are because of the o-line, why aren't Orton's?) Orton's not going anywhere.

Griese is expensive but already signed.

Grossman could come really cheap. If they can sign him for two years and less than $5 mil. total, I'd be okay with that.

I think they need to make Orton the starter and draft a QB (NO EXCEPTIONS). Sometimes a team needs to take one step back to go two steps forward. Depending on Grossman's price, re-sign him for no more than two years. If Orton falters even a little, Grossman gets his "one last chance." Once he fails (because he will--or gets hurt as he has in 4 of his 5 pro seasons), depending on how the team is doing next year, they can either ride him out, switch back to Orton or give the rookie some time. Either way, I expect next year to be pretty rough.

If they can get one of Ryan, Brohm or Woodson, I'd be for that. If not, take an o-lineman. There are three intriguing offensive lineman in FA: Faneca, Lilja and Gross. Get one of those (they should have got my boy Steinbach last year and not cut Colombo two years ago-OY!!!) and draft 2 o-line guys (and a QB) in the 1st-4th rounds and they have a start.

Unfortunately, I don't expect next year to be too much better than this year (8-8 maybe?), but it will have some hope with young guys.

The number one thing this team needs to do is fire Ron Turner. If they don't do that, I still won't have any hope for next year. I think this is one thing that we can all agree on.

To answer the question a LOT more succintly: I'd love for Orton to play well while the team loses the final two games to get a better prospect. However, I don't want them to try to lose.

Turner should go, and maybe Babich as well
I agree that Turner's time has come and gone at this point; you could also possibly add the Def. Co - Ord's name in there as well. There is no excuse for the kind on non - tackling that we've seen this year from the D - none. Lovie bears prime responsibility for this of course, but Angelo needs to step in and make him get rid of his buddy, if only to shake things up for the future.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the glaring hole we'll have at receiver next year, since Berrian's good as gone. Who's our deep threat if Rex comes back - Bradley? Can he even stay on the field for more than two consecutive quarters w/o getting injured? And since Lovie obviously dislikes him, where does that leave the team at that position as we head into the draft?

by Dmac on Dec 18, 2007 4:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Why is Berrian gone?
Assuming the price is reasonable (and even if not), I'll go on a limb and say they'll re-sign Bernard before sexxxy rexy.

70+ catches
1000 yards
45+ first downs
great deep threat

Considering the QB/o-line/RB situation, what's not to like?

by tyger1147 on Dec 18, 2007 4:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the feeling is
why would he stay?  Go to a team that has a line and a stable QB situation and he puts up better numbers.

by Adam T on Dec 19, 2007 9:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How good is he?
Seriously, how many "great" games has he had.  Has he ever had a 2 or 3 TD game?  How many 100 yard games has he had?  I know what you're going to say so don't.  There are receivers putting up big numbers with shitty QBs.  I will say, he's made some spectacular catches but if he's looking for Big Time money, let him get it somewhere else.  He hasn't shown he deserves big time money.

What a jerk...
...WR's putting up great numbers with shitty QB's and shitty O-lines and ineffectual run games are... Go ahead please list them.

Did you read my post?
I said there are receivers putting up big numbers, not great, with shitty QBs.  To name a few in the past couple years;  Lee Evans with Buffalo last year, Roy Williams with Detroit last year, Andre Johnson with Houston last year, Santana Moss with Washington a couple years ago with Brunell.  How am I a jerk for stating an opinion?  I asked how good is Berrian.  Can you answer any of my questions of how many 100 yard games does he have or 2 or 3 td games he has?  Fact is, you can.  On 1 hand i bet.  How am i a jerk for saying this about a WR that is looking for a big payday and look at his resume so far.  Explain.
GO BEARS!!!!!

Great if Berrian stays, but...
He's not talking like a guy who has any intention of signing for anything less than major dollars (aside from Moss, he'll be among the highest profile WR's in the FA class) - and his agent is not exactly known for being reasonable about anything regarding his clientele.

We
are playing for next year at this point.  Play Orton, don't risk injuring guys who are dinged up.  Plan for tomorrow, today.

It's the Packers next week. That beat them. Won't lose any sleep over losing to the Saints, but we need to beat the Packers.
