Jones Gone? Hester To Get Looks On Offense?

Be sure to reserve your spot in the 2nd Annual WCG Mock Draft!!

While a lot of questions remain about our coaching staff, we still have a ton of questions with our players.

This story all came from a 45 minute interview at the Combine.  Here is the outline of what it has to say.

  1. Thomas Jones has asked to be traded and the Bears will do their best to accommodate him.
  2. The Bears have no plans on trading Lance Briggs.
  3. The Bears will not be bringing in a quarterback in to challenge Rex Grossman for the starting QB job.
  4. The Bears are hoping to resign Ruben Brown.
  5. The Bears are not expecting to get Ian Scott and Alfonso Boone once they hit the market.
  6. The Bears will look at ways of getting Pro Bowl return man Devin Hester more regular looks on offense.
  7. The Bears will be discussing their options concerning Mike Brown and his durability.

of this was too shocking to me.  I think you deal TJ if you can and let him play out his contract if you can't.
No sense in trading Briggs unless you get a sweet offer.  He'll play too, I don't see that guy sitting willingly.

No news on Rex
Why would they need to bring in a QB to challenge Rex when they are already paying Griese 5 million to do that. Now if they won't let Griese challenge Rex for the starting QB job then thats a story.

Jones also asked to be traded after last season so now its an annual request.

I am not saying they do
but you know there are plenty of critics who think they should.

by Adam T on Feb 23, 2007 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

that sucks
Jones is going to royally screw up Chicago's offense if he actually gets traded.  Things are looking pretty grim for you guys.

The King
Thank you, King.  But I'm sure we'll manage.

i see
Like you've managed all last season right?

by KingRichard @ Windy City Gridiron on Feb 24, 2007 12:53 AM CST up reply actions

Managed...
all the way to the super bowl.  Losing in the super bowl?  not the ideal, but getting there?  30 other teams would have loved to had that chance.

oh come on
We both know your defense got you to the Super Bowl.  Thomas Jones is an excellent running back, and whenever you lose him, it's going to hurt your already odd offense.  I mean, you do remember what Grossman did all season and in the SB right?

mmmm ... cinnamon rolls
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Cinnamon-Rolls-I/Detail.aspx

INGREDIENTS
1 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
1 egg
3 cups bread flour
1/4 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons instant powdered milk
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
5 tablespoons butter, softened
1 teaspoon instant yeast
1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened (for spreading)
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
DIRECTIONS
Place water, egg, bread flour, white sugar, powdered milk, salt, 5 tablespoons butter and yeast in bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select DOUGH setting, and turn machine on.
Meanwhile; in a small saucepan, melt 1/3 cup butter. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar and ice cream; bring to a boil, and cook for 2 minutes. Pour caramel into the bottom of a lightly greased 9 x 13 inch pan.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
When machine has finished cycling remove dough from pan and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat dough into a rectangle. Spread with softened butter and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon. Crumble 1/2 cup brown sugar over the top. Roll up, and seal edge. Cut into 12 rolls, and place in prepared pan of caramel. Allow to rise until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown.

Optional: Omit all of the above, take fifth of Jack, drink liberally, throw-up on King Richard.

mmmmm ... limoncello ...
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/limoncello/detail.aspx

INGREDIENTS
10 lemon
1 liter vodka
3 cups white sugar
4 cups water
DIRECTIONS
Zest the lemons, and place zest into a large glass bottle or jar. Pour in vodka. Cover loosely and let infuse for one week at room temperature.
After one week, combine sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. DO NOT STIR. Boil for 15 minutes. Allow syrup to cool to room temperature.
Stir vodka mixture into syrup. Strain into glass bottles, and seal each bottle with a cork. Let mixture age for 2 weeks at room temperature.
Place bottled liqueur into the freezer. When icy cold, serve in chilled vodka glasses or shot glasses.

Optional: omit lemons, sugar and water - triple vodka.  Drink with ugly fat Packer fans.

mmmmm. ... Bailey's Sundae coffee ...
Brew 12 cups of coffee. While the coffee is brewing, fill each cup with a scoop of ice cream. Be sure to use large cups (the oversized types you get at coffee houses are best). Top each scoop of ice cream with just enough Irish cream so that the ice cream looks lightly coated.
When the coffee is brewed, pour it so that each cup is filled up about halfway. It is then up to each individual to add more Bailey's Irish cream, half-and-half, or sugar to suit his/her taste.

Optional: Omit ice cream, half/half. sugar, coffee, and triple Bailey's.

You can also add
Todd Johnson and Cameron Worrell to the "Probably Gone" list.

Tillman and Berrian are top priorities.

Also, Hardy Nickerson is the new Linebackers coach and Brick Haley is the new D-Line coach.

King Richard, Benson is a much better running back than Thomas Jones, and has a bigger upside.  Benson is seasoned enough to take over lead duties as the primary back.

by RME JICO on Feb 23, 2007 1:27 PM CST reply actions

Most of this seems common sense...
TJ will continue to bitch and moan because he is a sissy and is scared of a little competition for carries. He seems to forget that the Bears did him a favor even signing him, he was hitting washed up status when we scooped him up and put him behind an all-pro offensive line.

There is no one on the free agent market worth bringing in to compete with Rex...besides like Beardown said...we are already paying out the ass for Griese, who is just a boring game manager...and the sad part is he isn't even a good game manager. Heck, Orton is probably a better game manager than Griese.

I certainly won't miss Boone. If Tank is sticking around and Dvoracek comes back and plays well then i won't miss Scott too much.

Not surprised that they would try to get Devin the ball a little more...I just hope they don't screw him up like Miami did.

and lastly...it is about time they discuss Mike Brown's durability. I think they should just sit him out the first 14 games and let him play the last 2 to get ready for the playoffs.

by lopey986 on Feb 23, 2007 1:29 PM CST reply actions

I like
your idea on Brown.
Jones isn't a sissy though, he just wants some stability.  Not that I'm supporting him but it's not his fault the league doesn't have guaranteed contracts.

by cookding @ Windy City Gridiron on Feb 23, 2007 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

stability?
The average NFL career lasts 3 years. He is going to be 30 at the start of next season. He just went to the Superbowl with the Bears. I hope he takes a page out of Edgerrin James' book and we win the Superbowl while he rots away in Cleveland or Houston.

far less doom and gloom and the fact that he's hiring his own guys to come in makes me think he's sticking around....

Whatever with TJ, but relying on Benson to stay healthy seems foolish, hope there's a solid #2 back and it's not our Adrian Peterson. (I'll take the Oklahoma Adrian Peterson though...)

jones
will never have better trade value than right now. I would still rather have him getting some carries since benson is a couple more injuries away from doing towel drills, but if we make the line a little better we could roll with AP or pick up somebody.

by mike b on Feb 23, 2007 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Trade value ...
that's the key and the only upside to trading him now.  I do think they had a powerful combo with TJ and Benson, but can't put time in a bottle and I wouldn't have expected a repeat of that tandem's 2006 performance in 2007.  My only concern with Benson is he is still a bit injury-prone (but, then again, who isn't).

Benson
What is the latest on the severity of the injury he suffered during SB? I liked his effort level the 2nd half of the yr seemed like he was really fighting to break tackles and his balance was better as well.

I'm comfortable with our DTs even with Boone and Scott gone; Tank, a healthy Tommie, and hopefully a productive Dvoracek+ free agents/draft should be OK

Pretty clear we have safety problems which I think were partly the cause of our SB defensive gameplan- I am not a fan of Chris Harris!!!

Can't see us getting more than a 3rd rounder for TJ- will miss him even with the soap opera the past 2 years; durable enough, caught the ball, blocked.

I guess if we are targeting Tillman (who I thought had a Pro Bowl yr) then Vasher is gone and Manning will slip into his role in 08

by twaddle on Feb 23, 2007 6:39 PM CST reply actions

Harris...
Is a helluva Strong Safety. Get the guy a little more discipline and i think he is a damn good hitter to have coming up on the run.

(I hope you aren't thinking of the Reggie Wayne play in the Superbowl when you posted your dislike of Chris Harris...because that was Dan Manning who came up on that one.)

by lopey986 on Feb 24, 2007 12:43 AM CST up reply actions

And...
I'd much rather keep Vasher around than Tillman. Vasher and RMJ would be a nice combo.

Not Me
Can you imagine palying the Cardinals?  They'd toss it a little high to Fitz, then a little high to Boldin...
Fitz and Boldin would hold the ball up in the air and make Vasher and Jr try to touch it - and then pull it away like Lucy did to Charlie Brown.

KEEP TILLMAN!!!

Benson?
Minor sprain.

After tests in the locker room during the Super Bowl showed no significant damage, Benson elected to sit out the rest of the game.

Mike Mulligan said he's heard that from multiple Bears people.

seriously?  Wow, and that's our horse for next year?
