Briggs trade in the works

According to Jay Glazer and Adam Schefter the Bears and Skins are talking about a Briggs and the 31st pick for the 6th pick. I find this trade odd because the 6th pick is too low to grab Calvin Johnson and too high to take one of the other WR's, Greg Olsen or Patrick Willis. The recent additions of Archuleta and Adams make taking someone like Landry or Branch less of a need than it would have been a week ago. Maybe Angelo thinks the Raiders will trade Moss and draft CJ meaning Russell or Quinn could be on the board at 6? So this leads me to believe that this is a precursor to another trade. I agree....
I could see Angelo trading down out of six to stockpile his beloved out-of-the-first-round picks.

It has worked
for him in the past. I think the best move would be a trade down from 16-20 and target Olsen, Meachem, or Willis and get another 2nd or 3rd rounder along a few day 2 picks to use to get some young o-lineman.

I find this difficult to believe...
...the McCaskey's don't do business like this (todd Bell/Al Harris anyone?), and Angelo doesn't make trades like this.

Doesn't happen.

wow
our first and briggs for the 6th?

seems a little low.

by mike b on Mar 27, 2007 12:21 AM CDT reply actions

yeah
that seems a lot low. Our first should not be in the plan at all. Whatever happened to two first round picks?

Doesn't seem to be as much interest in Briggs as he was hoping.

hit him in his earhole

Jimmy Johnson
created a chart on the value of draft picks, I cant seem to find it anywhere on line but there is a huge gap in the point value of the 2 picks that you would have to include a player like Briggs to make it fair. As for trading Briggs they can recend the tag like NYJ did with John Abraham.

Found it
The Bears pick is worth 600 points and the Skins pick is worth 1600. So Briggs would would be needed to make the trade fair. The link is here:

skins picks
Another thing complicating matters is that the Redskins don't have any draft picks in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounds. So if we wanted a throw-in 2nd or 3rd round pick in the deal, it can't happen.

Yes it is low but thats what Washington offered
Nothing stops us from saying very interesting but we would need a 2nd or 3rd round pick for this trade to work.

hmm...
i dunno, i just don't see it. the skins just gave out a big contract to london fletcher-baker. and if they were going to talk briggs, i think they would have found a way to work everything out in the trade with Archuleta.

by lopey986 on Mar 27, 2007 12:52 AM CDT reply actions

and besides...
that is just what the Skins want to do, they haven't even talked to the Bears yet. I would like to send a box of day old donuts that i bought for 50% off to angelina jolie in exchange for a reach around, but i think i'm gonna need to talk to her first before i start reporting that it is "in the works".

detroit
read that detroit will proabably trade their pick, briggs and 31 for 2 would work for me. I don't see detroit paying the money briggs wants though, and I would rather not see him in the division.

Not realistic
I don't think that Briggs would allow that.  All he has to do is to refuse a long term deal and any trade is over.  You think he wants to get embarrassed for the rest of his career and get beat up by the Bears twice a year.  But if it's out there, TAKE IT!

Briggs
is all about the money so he would do it, but Detroit took Ernie Sims in the 1st round last year to be their Will backer.

crap
if you believe the mock drafts, were we to trade for the 6th pick and draft the best available player we would be pulling...adrian peterson.

don't see that happening again though.

by mike b on Mar 27, 2007 2:09 AM CDT reply actions

i'd do it
but if these reports are true, this is what the skins want to offer, which means we might be able to ask for more. if they throw in a 2nd or 3rd round pick (maybe next year's, since i'm pretty sure they don't have any this year), then definitely pull the trigger.

i don't see
briggs as being worth more than a mid-first round pick, which is essentially what washington would be giving up in this scenario. briggs is great, but he does't play a position that most teams sink a lot of money into, and he isn't signed long term. a team that wants him would have to justify giving up a first round pick AND giving a huge contract to an outside linebacker that very well could be a system player.

look at the interest cato june got (read=none), and see how much teams are willing to give up for cover 2 outside linebackers. june is no briggs, but june barely got a contract, and teams didn't have to give up anything for him.

the thing i don't understand is that there isn't anyone at 6 that makes sense for the bears, unless they want to make willis a OLB. But why draft an unknown to replace a known, when the number 6 pick would probably get a contract similar to what briggs wants. all the other positions likely to be there (QB, DE, S) either aren't needs, or a cheaper and comparable option could be found elsewhere (such as getting david carr instead of quinn).

i think it is great value for the bears, but i don't get what they'd do with that value.

While I agree to an extent...
I would be satisfied (not elated, but not angry) if the Bears came away with Johnson, Quinn or Joe Thomas.
