Hester Chicago's Best Athlete?

So fellow Bears blogger has done a list of the five best athlete's currently playing in the Windy City.

At the tops of his list is Devin Hester.  The rest of the list is

  1. Brian Urlacher
  2. Ben Gordon
  3. Carlos Zambrano
  4. Paul Konerko
Honorable Mentions: Derek Lee, Kirk Hinrich, Jim Thome, Ben Wallace, Rex Grossman and Cuauhtemoc Blanco

I don't per say have a problem with the list except I have no idea what criteria we is going by.  If we use the broadest sense of the word athlete here is what I know about Hester.  He can run really fast and he can change directions just as fast.  I know that Urlacher is strong, really fast, he is tough and can jump quite high.  That gives Urlacher the edge.

If the list is designed to gauge Chicago's favorites yes Hester is all the buzz, but Urlacher has already earned his place in Chicago sports history.  He has already etched his place next to George, Butkus and Singletary.  Hester might be the hot topic, but he has a few more years playing at last season's level before we can talk about him that way.

What do you think?  Give me your top 5 list.

Crap list.
There is no consistent criteria.

Best "pure" athlete? Where's Tyrus Thomas?

Best at his position? Then it's definitely Urlacher with Zambrano a close second.

Best for his sport/importance? Then it's Zambrano and Urlacher side-by-side.

Rex Grossman? Guess it's not about performance.

Jim Thome? Guess it's not close to being about athletic ability.

Not that I'm a hockey fan, but... and MLS?

This is a crap, irrelevant, un-researched list that I just wasted five minutes of my boss's time on. Sweeeeeeeeet.

If we're talking freak athletes...
then its gotta be Urlacher and Tyrus Thomas with no one else a close 3rd.

I take that back...
Tommie Harris would be a close 3rd.

I'm surprised he's nowhere on the list. Freak of an athlete, important, one of the best at his position. He should be on there.

Wow this is an idiotic list...
here are the criteria:
1) What would a [city] sports fan say is his or her favorite local athlete? 2) Would the player's name be familiar to someone who doesn't follow sports or only follows local sports casually? 3) Would the player be recognized walking down the street?

That's a stupid set of criteria, which basically boils down to an entirely different question, namely: who's the most popular athlete in Chicago?

Furthermore, the list is completely inconsistent with the criteria. Hester is more popular/recognizable/familiar than Urlacher? Are you kidding me?

What a joke.

Paul Konerko?
When it comes to athlecism, Konerko can't hold Derrek Lee's jock strap.  Lee was recruited to play college basketball (UNC, IIRC) and at his size runs very well.

Alfonso Soriano is a superior athlete as is Felix Pie.

Wow...
Zambrano and Konerko don't belong anywhere near that list.

Neither does Gordon.

None of those three are even the best athletes on their own teams.

Cubs - Soriano, Pie, DeRosa are all better athletes than Zambrano based on athleticism.  Shoot - Jason Marquis is probably a better athlete than Z.

Sox - half of the team are better athletes than Konerko

Bulls - Tyrus Thomas?  Luol Deng?

That list is terrible.

Terrible list, yeah
but it got you talking faster than anything else posted in the last week.  I can work with that.

I had forgotten about Tyrus, so yes he should be on that list.

That and of
course it is technically the competition, so a few pot shots never hurt.

No Bobby Sippio?

I am appalled.

Here it is...
  1. Brian Urlacher - Proved to be the all around best. Dominates games with Speed, agility, and jumping ability.
  2. Tyrus Thomas - Go to youtube and type his name in, 'nuff said.
  3. Tommie Harris - The guy is I believe the size of a bear and is still one of our fastest on the team and as far as strength and agility for his field goes (D-line) he is off the charts.
  4. Ben Wallace -A beast of a man. He may be older, but he is cut from rock, and plays a position at his probable height of 6'8 where he should be 4-5 inches taller. Makes freak plays on the court.
  5. Ben Gordon - Also a beast in his own right. He has a deal with EAS. They don't give those out to slouches.
