BEARS Fall To The Lions 37-27

WTF?  What the hell do I do with this?  It was great to see our offense move so well and be in the red zone so often.  I mean 286 and 2 TDs by a QB is nice, but what am I supposed to make of the 3INTs?  On two throws Griese directly caused a 14 points swing.  He made a horrible throw to get intercepted just as the Bears were knocking at the door and then he just gave them a nice easy jaunt to the endzone on another.

While I am at bitching here.   What the hell is going on with this run game?  I don't care if it is Benson or our line, they need to do something.  These 50 yard 3 yard per carry rush games are starting to tick me off.

This defense is too banged up right now cover up all the mistakes the offense is making.

This is Cedric Beson's 3rd fumble of the season and Hester's 5th in two games.  Can't we practice this stuff?

Heading into the 4-0 Green Bay Packers next week, the Bears are 3 and 2 games behind the Pack and the Lions respectively.  Looking at this schedule the Bears don't have much time to get things corrected.  If not for the fact that so many teams in the NFC are doing bad, they could have been out of it already.

Why....
..did Lovie stick with Grossman for long long in an unqualified manner, yet benches Benson for a series+ if he fumbles.

Why is Orton being neglected by this team. He had ZERO time to prepare in 2005, yet ( the Cinci game not withstanding ) he looked better than Griese in his 10 win stretch?

For a coach who claims (rightfully so) that he wants to support his players his decision making for all things not Grossman is puzzling. I want to say perhaps it's Angelo's influence since Rex was 'his guy' but so is Benson and he's being treated like a child. Either bench his ass for some time, or show him the support given Grossman.

benson
also isn't do much, you hope your running back can make a little something happen without a nice big hole, he doesn't seem to be that kind of back. Offense doesn't look like it has a clue what it wants to do, with all three backs seeing time and running the same plays by the end. They don't look like they know who their quarterback is; you'd think you would know this shit by the end of the preseason.

I would bet that griese has a shorter leash than grossman, his stupid picks today can be shrugged of once as rust, next week their aren't really man excuses.

Next question is 4 weeks from now when we are most likely out of the playoff picture do you develop grossman or Orton for the rest of the year? On a team whose #1 struggles this heavily it says something about Orton not being able to make a run at the job.

by mike b on Sep 30, 2007 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I am beginning to think....
They're just not interested in playing Orton. And if they are out of the picture, then YES you have to play Orton in order to decide where he might fit next year. Grossman is gone, that much is clear.

Anyone know Griese's contract status?

It's clear what the problem is: no one is going to respect our running game and our passing game cannot make up the deficiency. Green Bay has the same problem, but Brett Favre can more than make up for it.

by PopeFlick on Sep 30, 2007 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I think
he signed a 5 year deal.

by Adam T on Sep 30, 2007 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

contract status
One's contract doesn't really matter in the world of non-guaranteed contracts.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 30, 2007 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure they do.
Are you telling me salary cap hits are ignored and have no bearing on personnel decision making?

It's not as simple as your statement makes it out to be, and if you know the Bears you know they are tight with the $ and would rather not be paying someone who's not on the team.

by PopeFlick on Sep 30, 2007 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

benson had almost no holes to run through
again today. the few times he did, he had pretty decent pick ups. i don't know wtf is going on, but our offensive line is playing really bad - is it the schemes, the play calling, or the line? no RB will get many yards with as little daylight as benson has had most of this season. and very few QBs will do well when always facing a pass rush. griese did better to avoid it than rex, but he was under fire all day. the receivers did better, but still had a few key drops. it seems like nothing on offensive is in rhythm at all.

"Old Geezer" Offensive Line
There's a pretty short window when build your offensive line with "old geezers" instead of through the draft.

"The Right Man for the Job" my ass.  Not today, not against the f'ing LIONS.

What else did this clairvoyant writer with a man-crush say?

I am happy to report that Griese said all the right things, and while I'm not ready to define the challenge as anything more than a wild-card berth in a mediocre conference, a 9-7 record and first-round playoff assignment on the road is doable if the new guy is as efficient as he is articulate.

Hey, Jay, I know a lot of 'articulate' people - and they can't throw a football for shit either.  Anyone want to put out the odds on a 'mea culpa' column tomorrow?  I won't hold my breath.

that I'm not a Rex fan either.  But to think that Griese was going to take us to the promised land because he is 'articulate' in a goddamn press conference.  Sheesh.

Be careful what you wish for..
cause we're gettin' it.Greise played no better than Grossman.Sure he has a better pocket presense, but now we have a qb that has a weaker arm and can't throw the long ball.Which by the way, needs to be put back in the playbook.
The o line and the recievers need help. And fast.I don't care if Orton is in there,if you don't block, you can't run.If you don't block your qb makes mistakes.Tuff to move the ball in a play-action offense with no line.
The dropped balls by recievers are killing us.We will not win with the recievers dropping balls that are right in the numbers. A jfl coach told me years ago, "if you can tough it you can catch it." No matter what qb is back there, he will need help from the receivers.
The d looked real good until the 4th quarter, considering how many probowlers watched from the sidelines. The 2nd string guys can't hold the #1 offense in the league on every play.

all the griese venom
he played today about as good as rex has this year, after not playing for two years. i'll wait a bit before i am furiously pounding my keyboard.

what long ball has grossman thrown this year that was accurate or even complete?

by mike b on Sep 30, 2007 5:30 PM CDT reply actions

True dat
but Griese was probably playing the worst defense we'll see all year and I know he can't throw a deep ball that is accurate nor complete. At least Grossman can do that. It's choosing between 2 flavors of suck to be honest.

Benson/O-line sucks.

If they don't have an O-line
Which they don't, they are far better off with the short, accurate passer than the gunslinger.  What's the point of the long ball if there's no time to throw it?

Griese had a bad game, but it was still the best game this offense has played all year (and I don't necessarily mean that as a compliment).  If he starts throwing as many INTs as TDs, I say stay with him.  If he gets better, and the injuries stop immediately, I still think they can sneak in with a wild card berth.  If he gets worse, oh lordy.  What's Drew Bledsoe's phone number?

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on Sep 30, 2007 5:47 PM CDT reply actions

We lost to the Lions ...
the Lions.  A team that is truly Gawd awful.  They have a joke of a secondary and Griese still threw 3 INTs (more than the 2 TDs).  The 'short, accurate passer' threw 3 interceptions.  Blame it on the O Line if you want, but I think the post above captured it correctly - Griese and Rex are 'two flavors of suck' right now.

Once again, folks, the Bears just lost by 10 points to the Detroit Lions.  There is no nice way to spin this.

Rusty Griese
Picks and other passes thrown behind the receiver. Either his timing is off or he and receivers not yet on same page. But they should be by next week. If not, won't even be 4-4 by our bye when some players can get some rest.

by Jbasic89 on Sep 30, 2007 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

neither grossman nor griese
can succeed when our line is as porous as its been so far. benson has no lanes to run. the QBs have no time to look for receivers (who drop the ball, anyway). i dunno if its the lineman, the blocking scheme or too predictable play-calling, or all of the above, but we've got no shot unless we get that part fixed immediately.

ron turner. he may be worse than shoop.

by Jbasic89 on Sep 30, 2007 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh
I guess I am not alone with a need to absolutely rant after this last game. The entire team sucks. Well, except Hester, and even he feels no desire to hold onto the ball with his two crazy fumbles. We probably deserved to lose at least one.

Griese cannot successfully throw more than 15-20 yards downfield. That brings up the defense close, clogging the run and allowing for more blitzes. I have been a Grossman supporter, but I understand and fully accept that he deserves to lose his job. But Griese lacks the physical gifts of most starting QBs around the league. If he wants to be successful, we need to be perfect as an offense.

Honestly, I have no idea what is wrong with this team. I have this feeling that you throw Tom Brady in as a quarterback and he goes out and throw four interceptions. We need to realize that our offense league has regressed (due to age) down to average. That is not an excuse, because our offense should be better. We just cannot rely on those guys to be exceptional and create huge holes. We need a threat of offense to give everyone a chance. That and we need to duct tape the ball to their hands.

I need to go to bed. Hopefully, the coaches at Halas Hall have solutions. I sure don't.

what deep ball
did griese "duck" out there that we know he can't throw more than 20 yards?

what has rex showed anyone this year that he should be back in there?

deep ball?
Griese has never been able to throw a deep ball.

It isn't just this week, it has been something that he has struggled with his entire career.

U of I reject
Ron Turner is prolly the worst offensive coordinator in the NFL.  Did we think that that the Illinois reject would be any better than his brother Norv?  This offense struggled because of Ron.  No creativity!  He does not know how to make adjustments with the looks the defense gives him.  Does our QB, O-line, WR's, and RB suck right now?  Yes but this all falls on the shoulders of Ron Turner.  Lovie should do what Brian Billick did last year.  Fire Ron and take over the play calling!
Ron Turner Sucks!

by PaxtonMustang on Oct 1, 2007 6:31 AM CDT reply actions

But...
Ron Turner was our offensive coordinator last year and we had a very exciting offense.

As for Lovie calling the plays, he is a former defensive coordinator so i highly doubt he would be very good at calling an offense.

Again - "Old Geezer" Offensive Line
Hey! If the Bears were able to run the ball in the 4th Qtr we wouldn't be having this conversation!

by phastphil on Oct 1, 2007 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

Griese deserves quite a bit of the blame also
If he doesn't throw 2 INTs inside the 10 and another that was returned for a pick 6, the Bears win this game going away.

by cltcprd on Oct 1, 2007 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Ron Turner
was our offensive coordinator last year.  And did you see how he took the offense that was already in place prior to his arrival, and began to screw it up?  Everyone is talking about this offense.  Well lets look at the slow decline it's been on since Turner took over.  Yeah...the offense was exciting last year.  Exciting for about the first 6 games.  And then we played Arizona on MNF.  From then on the offense has slowly gotten worse.  We are just noticing it now?  Come on!  What about our defense/special teams always bailing out the offense.  I love the Bears and I hate to see them lose like this.  And it doesn't matter that Lovie was a d-coordinator, he would still make better play calls than Ron Turner!
