Bears Fumble And Bumble The Chargers to Victory

The Bears start off the season somewhere they shouldn't be, the basement of the NFC North.  Now I am not worried about the Bears they will still win this division, but I am fuming after this game.  The Bears D played like they were possessed and everybody else just kept putting them back on the field.

I am quite upset at a number of people, but one of them isn't Rex Grossman and I guess that is a good thing.

  1. Why the hell is Devin Hester fair catching punts when nobody is within 10 yards of him?
  2. When nothing was working for the offense, why did we not try something from that Devin Hester package we keep hearing about?
  3. Why is it every time it looked like Grossman was getting into a groove, we followed it up with a string of running plays?
A lot of things went into the Bear losing this game, including the O line letting Chargers running untouched to Grossman in the first, a bad  hops on a punt and fumbles by running backs.

I think OC Ron Turner takes a bit of blame here, some of his play calling was horrible.

Again, not worried this D is going to wreak havoc, but the coaches and players on this offense had best figure out what is exactly they are trying to do.

We'll take a more detailed look at the numbers and how everybody did tomorrow.

i would
like to give grossman a nod, i thought he would shit the bed, he got nailed a few times and held on to the ball. not a bad job.

My thoughts.....
  • First off, I'm not worried about this season. This loss shouldn't hurt to much.
  • Had they not fumbled on those two run plays, the game would be completley different. You've got to hold onto the ball.
  • The defnese looked better than I had even expected. LT for the most part was shut down, and they looked great all around.
  • McBride needs to figure it out. That fumble on the punt return killed us, and lost all the momentum that we had.
  • If our offense can improve, and they will against other defenses, we should be really hard to beat.
  • Berrian looked good, and made some nice catches.

What do you mean by...
McBride needs to figure it out? Who is McBride?

The only "fumble" on a punt return i remember is one that bounced off McGowans shoulder, did i miss something else cause i did dose off for a bit.

ha...
Trumaine McBride was inactive....and McGowan didn't fumble, he didnt even realize the ball hit him...not his fault, that was just chargers luck.

but what the fuck are we going to do about our running game?

by E Rock on Sep 9, 2007 10:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Disagree.
He should have known where the ball was, as the siggal was clearly given by Hester that he was letting it drop. On that alone, he had no reason to throw that block, because if he was paying attention he would have known there was no one to block for.

That's the play that cost us the game, as it gave them the TD and all the mo'.

by PopeFlick on Sep 10, 2007 12:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

@E Rock
I know he didn't fumble, hence why i put "FUMBLE"...but yeah, the running game didn't look good. My BIGGEST problem with the running game wasn't the fact that the guys fumbled, it is their demeanor after they coughed it up. Both went to the sideline and sulked the rest of the frickin' game. AP didn't even pick his head up from between his legs the rest of the day after his fumble.

Here is one thing we can at least say about Grossman, rarely is he ever sulking on the sideline after he turns the ball over, at least he is over there and feeling the itch to TRY to make up for it.

2nd and 1 ... run up the gut
3rd and 2?  run up the gut.
4rth and 2?  John Shoop gets his revenge.

The Bears D played well all day, really.  Only giving up 14 points, 6 of them on a sort-of trick play, and dominating the first half.  Would have dominated the 2nd had the offense given them a breather.

Turnovers sucked.  Hester's fair catches were indeed annoying as well.  We're going to have to get some mojo going on offense next week - but I think the defense is looking good, unless Brown is hurt and out for more than just the 2nd half of this first game.  That would not be good.

You pretty much summed it up...
string of 8+ yards passes, then three straight rushes for no gain, completely baffling.

by Zachariah on Sep 9, 2007 8:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good point
about Hester today. I was thinking the same thing all game long, he seemed like he made up his mind in the pregame that he was going to fair catch everything today. With our lack of potent offense, we need more than that from him. The offense was bad, but the turnovers are what killed us. The defense was strong, just need the offense to score some points and keep them off the field once in awhile. I'm not worried, San Diego is possibly the best team in the league and should be expected to win this game. I disagree about Grossman; he wasn't horrible, but he wasn't good either. That fumble of his started giving me visions of bad Rex from last season.

by qcbear on Sep 9, 2007 7:05 PM CDT   0 recs

hester...
I don't agree at all on the Hester fair catch.

Hester seemed to be a little cautious, but not overly so.  I was impressed that he made smart decisions instead of trying to force things.

I don't recall any fair catches that were obvious that he should have tried to return them.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 9, 2007 7:25 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree biglowitzki...
The Chargers seemed rather content on just punting the ball high and 40 yards rather than booting it the way i know Scifres can. I think they were happy having Hester fair catch all the punts and i can't say i blame Hester, it didn't look like there were any where he definately should have run with it.

by lopey986 on Sep 9, 2007 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I can recall
in my mind at least two where he didn't have anyone within ten yards of him and did the fair catch. Not a huge deal, I just though he looked very tentative today.

by qcbear on Sep 9, 2007 9:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And oh yea...
... the play calling was terrible.

I though it may have been Shoop calling the plays.  Very, very conservative.

Only one ball thrown deep all game?  Rex's biggest strength is throwing the deep ball, and Berrian's (and Bradley's - did he even see the field?) biggest strength is catching the deep ball.

At least try it.

And the offensive line, especially on the run, was pretty awful.  You can't expect much from Benson when he continually gets hit behind the line of scrimmage.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 9, 2007 7:26 PM CDT   0 recs

Does anybody see
any type of running game here? Let's face it -- Thomas Jones wasn't a premier back, and the Bears might have gotten rid after him just before he started to decline.

But -- they needed a vet behind Benson, not another semi-experienced back. This tandem might not be up to the challenge.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 9, 2007 9:26 PM CDT   0 recs

running game...
the running game struggles have little to do with benson or peterson.  they have to do with the struggles of a very old offensive line.

once again (i keep saying this), you can't expect much when you running backs get hit behind the line of scrimmage.  the offensive line created VERY FEW holes today.  that is probably due, in part, to the fact that the charger's defense is really good.  part this was a struggle in pre-season games, and now it continues to be a struggle in the regular season.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 9, 2007 10:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...
like i said in the game thread, it seems that we only have one running play in the playbook and that is halfback dive. That is what we are missing from TJ, the ability to bounce those plays outside when the middle is cluttered up as it often was today.

10 in the box
I really think you are being a tad harsh on the oline.  It's hard for 5 guys to block 9.

by Chad on Sep 9, 2007 11:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No way
they couldn't even block the front 3 off the ball.  Miller was just murdered out there.

More play action ...
would have been nice - since they were jamming the box.  Very little play action.

injuries
I hope that the knee injuries to Mike Brown and Dusty Dvoracek aren't of the season ending variety. The Dusty injury would be of the Greg Olsen "why the hell was he playing" type too. The play-by-play guys on WBBM made the observation that Dusty shouldn't have been in on the kickoff return where he got hurt, but rather one of the back-up offensive linemen instead since the defense had been in for a large part of the second half and the risk of a fatigue injury was much greater.

Brown...
Looks like his might end his season. He was pretty upset in his interview, and said that it is a sprained knee right now, but doesn't look good.

He actually broke down and started crying.

by Twins Territory on Sep 9, 2007 9:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Is anyone really suprised?
Mike Brown is hurt again.

Did they ever get him to restructure his contract over the offseason, i know they had talked about it but i was never sure if it happened.

from PFT...
MIKE BROWN OUT FOR THE YEAR, AGAIN?

Officially, Bears safety Mike Brown has a knee sprain.  Unofficially, it might be worse than that.

After Sunday's loss to the Chargers, Brown broke down while talking to reporters about the injury.

"It's another sad day in the chapter of my football-playing career," Brown said. "I don't know what else to tell you guys."

As the Chicago Tribune points out, the Bears called quarterback Rex Grossman's 2004 ACL tear a knee sprain, too.

Brown previously suffered season-ending injuries in 2004 and 2006.

UPDATE:  We're hearing rumblings that Brown has a torn ACL.  We're also hearing that Bears defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek has suffered a knee injury.

Meh
hold LT to 25 yards and lose. Suck.

Berrian's boner, 2 fumbles, forgetting to block people. Ugly day for the offense.

I don't know if it's the same guys....
...but it's amusing to see people saying that the O-line didn't give Grossman time, but they should have thrown the ball more. True, going deep a few more times could have resulted in opening up lanes for running, but it also could have resulted in more "Bad Rex".

The whole whole offense was, at best, below adequate. The O-line got dominated. The running backs didn't have any time, but also gave up two fumbles and didn't "create on their own". Grossman wasn't horrible (which seems acceptable to you guys), but he certainly wasn't any good either.

I've suddenly jumped off the offensive bandwagon.

During the offseason...
we kept hearing about Hester and the offense, etc.  Why, then, do we run, I believe, one single play with Devin Hester at WR?  Were there more than the one play I saw him go to the right and we run a screen play to the other side?  It's very possible that I missed some others.

Also, Mark Bradley did not enter the game once.  Davis seemed to be on the field only a few times.

I'm just generally confused at our play calling.  I'm sick of seeing 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 FB, and Benson.  This is why I was excited about the prospect of Hester and a healthy Mark Bradley.  If Bradley isn't healthy, then fucking suit up Hass.

If you don't put "the talent" on the field and call three straight running plays after moving the ball 30+ yards on 3 consecutive pass plays, how can you expect a QB to do anything useful?

I'm continually underwhelmed by Rashied Davis.

You forget, Mike ...
the explosive creativity of that one play when Hester was in.  It was a screen pass to Mckie, which I believe wasn't completed.

Offensive creativity - Feel the excitement, it surges through you!

Yeah, I know
and THAT underwhelmed me too.  What a STUPID freakin' play.  If they're going to run a screen like that, put in Wolfe AND Hester.  Then, later, run play action to Wolfe and throw deep to Hester.

Or SOMETHING.  Anything but a screen to the slowest FB I've ever seen.

run game
Running game was pretty awful the first couple of games last year too, so hopefully we can pick it up again this year because obviously this offense needs to be able to run.  And I think they will.

I wouldn't want to be the Chiefs next week...
