Bears Sign Rex Grossman

The Chicago Bears and Rex Grossman have come to terms on a 1 year deal.

The deal pays Grossman 3 million in base salary and has up to 2 million in incentives.

"I love the organization," Grossman told ChicagoBears.com late last month. "They drafted me. A lot of bad things have happened to me since I've been here with injuries and things, but the 2006 season was a special one. We almost completed the ultimate goal. I want to finish that. I want to finish what I started and I want to be a Bear for the rest of my life."

I think this is a win win situation.  We get a guy who obviously likes it here.  He could have gone elsewhere and might have even found a guaranteed starting job.  He wasn't going to make a lot of money regardless.  The Bears get him for one more year to see if he is anything.  If he turns it around we work the long term deal.  If he bombs out, we can wash our hands of him.

I think this might close the career of Brian Griese as a Bear.  I don't know how much it would cost us to release him, but with uncertainty with both Orton and Grossman the Bears cannot roll without a guy waiting in the wings.

Rex resigns
Okay.  Neckbeard's job to lose.  Release Greise, draft an OT in round 1 and a QB for the future in round two and lets roll.

1 Year Deal
I'm OK with it because it's only a one year deal. If he plays well, he will deserve and get a better deal. If he plays poorly - SEE YA!

Me Deuce ...
I like this deal.  Gives Rex another chance, presumably, to fight for his position.  John Clayton on E!SPN made it sound like the entire team was behind Rex, so he does have some backing with his compadres.  So I'm all for a 1-year deal.  If he sucks, indeed, let him go at the end of the year.

Good for everybody.
I really didn't want Rex back, but if he's going to take a gamble like this, then he clearly believes in himself in very significant ways, and I certainly respect that. I can't see how this is a bad thing at all.

Good freaking god
"He could have gone elsewhere and might have even found a guaranteed starting job."

This is almost certainly untrue. Name me one team that would trade their current starting QB for Grossman. I'm sure you'll think of one. Now, go ask that team's fanbase whether they'd like to have Grossman.

Griese was serviceable. Orton was serviceable. Grossman was bad. Consistently bad. Always has been, always will be.

Seriously, go to http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch?&q=rex+grossman and review the comments under almost every post. They're almost universally painting this as a completely ludicrous move.

And about it being a one year deal (another chance)... remember how last year was his CONTRACT year? You think he's going to wake up now, after he had an opportunity to cash in? How many chances does he get? He has been given every opportunity to succeed.

The only good news to come out of any of this is that JA's neglect is finally going to hit the fan, and hopefully new management can come in and clean things up.

um
miami and atlanta. you forget, a lot of people think grossman has suffered bad luck and been dealt a bad deal by the chicago fan base and that if he gets out of chicago he can still turn into a decent qb. definately a better qb than cleo lemon and joey harrington.

Media Posturing
Everyone lies a little bit to the media.  It's accepted and appreciated.  No one really wants the truth that badly.

I'm happy with the deal.  While Grossman isn't great, he's the best FA option available.  If you don't believe it tell me who you wwould rather get.

Also, Grossman is so much better than Griese.  Griese was not serviceable in any way.  Orton handled himself better than either Grossman or Griese, but Grossman has had the most success as a Bear, and that's why he's back.
