Bears Personnel Updates

Obviously the big news is the signing of Rex Grossman, but that does not mean the job is his.  Per one NFL source going into camp, the job is Kyle Orton's to lose.  I think this is only fair.  Orton wins 10 games as a rookie and then finds himself the third string QB.  He only just got his shot and did enough to warrant the opportunity.

Reports say that Tommie Harris is looking for a contract somewhere in the range of the deal that Dwight Freeney received from the Colts.  That contract:

$72 million over six seasons. Freeney will be paid $37.72 million over the first three years of his deal, and it's believed Harris has targeted $40 million.

Look the Bears are going to have to fork out some money to somebody.  They cannot keep letting their best guys get away.  If it isn't going to be Lance Briggs, than why not Tommie Harris?  Obviously, there are probably still some concerns about him staying healthy.

Super agent and pain in Jerry Angelo's side, has said that even though it looks like Briggs, Berrian and Ayanbadejo are going to be exploring free agency, that he and the Bears are still in contact and will be working all 4 contracts up until free agency and beyond if needed.

''We're talking to them on all four guys [including defensive tackle Tommie Harris], and it's ongoing,'' Rosenhaus said. ''I don't want to characterize our negotiations, but if we do not get something done before free agency opens, we will continue to communicate with them during free agency.''

Rosenhaus got a bad rap for the whole TO problem a few years back and got hit again for some of the decisions that Briggs made, but he cannot be a constant thorn.  Some teams wills top dealing with him and eventually players will.  He needs to get guys their money and get them on the team without always so much hassle.

If we lose all four
especially three of them (Berrian, Briggs, and tommie), we're really in some dire straits.  And that agent will not be very popular in post-game threads here this fall.

Rosenhaus
I don't really care for his flashy way of doing business.  I would prefer someone who is a little more professional, but I think he ultimately does whatever his clients want.
TO wanted a media circus, Rosenhaus got it done.
Briggs wanted to negotiate through the media, Rosenhaus got it done.

The guy is clearly excellent and players realize that.  Angelo has shown the ability to work well with him, too.  Look at Greg Olsen, whose agent is Rosenhaus.  Olsen said he wanted to be in camp on time.  Rosenhaus got it done with Angelo, and still got good money for Olsen.

I compare it to Hendry respecting and being willing to work with Boras in baseball.  Some teams will rule him out, and those teams will miss out on some of the best talent.
I'll give Angelo credit for welcoming the opportunity to deal with him.

Exactly
Rosenhaus is hated by fans (mostly anyway) because fans are fans of teams almost always first, and Rosenhaus helps the players. Almost every player (or person) wants to get paid the most he can and so Rosenhaus does that the best way he can. Of course the team is going to make him out to be a bad guy to save money and fans will usually buy into that (which they probably should as fans of the team).

But as you rightly pointed out, when his players say, "Get me as much as possible, but I want in camp on time, no if's, and's or but's." He does it.

OT
"The availability of wide receiver Roy Williams is also in hot debate with Jacksonville, Tennessee, Tampa Bay and New Orleans all interested. The Lions are looking for a second round pick and have told several clubs they would even consider a pick in next years' draft to get a deal done."

From draftdaddy.com, a site I'm now addicted to. Why wouldn't the Bears go after him? I don't want to ehar anything about in-division trades.

but that's the reason
if williams was available to us for a 2nd round pick, of course we'd jump on it. he's an elite receiver (the kind that's actually worth the money berrian wants), he's still very young and would have plenty of great seasons still in him, and a 2nd round pick would be easy to give up for him. but there's no way detroit is trading him within division. they don't want him killing them for at least 2 games a year for the next bunch of years.

then maybe
if the cowboys decide not o go after a top 5 draft pick, they could trade one of their firsts to detroit to get him. ha, they'd have 2 roy williams on their team.
