Jets Signing Faneca?

Somebody help me out.  I thought Free Agency doesn't open until tomorrow at midnight, but today this comes across the wire:

"Word around the league" is that the Jets have already negotiated a deal for free agent Alan Faneca that would guarantee him about $20 million.

Isn't that against the rules or tampering?

I know this news makes some of you happy, but it seems like a lot of guys are signed already.

I thought it was just guys who were released and they have a different set of rules.

Can somebody straighten me out here?

Is it a case of just not being able to sign contracts? If so, why haven't we heard about all the free agents visiting teams?

Yes...
... it is illegal.

No, nothing will be done about it.

Ok
I can live with that, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding the concept.

Not illegal at alll
Just like the NBA, you can negotiate before the official start, just can't be announced officially until tomorrow.

Pretty sure...
... you are wrong on this one Rob.

My understanding is that teams are not allowed to talk to players until they become free agents, and only players who have been cut are officially free agents right now.

I believe it is like baseball rather than the NBA.  In baseball you have the post-World Series window where teams have exclusive rights to negotiate with their players.

Yup... from what this link says, it looks like it is illegal, but everyone does it.

I stand corrected
thanks for the info...

So then if
rotoworld or pft can find out people are illegally negotiating, the NFL just doesn't care about it's own rules?
