Draft Breakdown- Joe Flacco

With the 2008 NFL Pro Football Draft coming up quickly on the horizon I though it appropriate to take a look at some of the likely candidates for the Bears. This section will be profiling players that the Chicago Bears might target on that weekend in late April.

The next player that we will look at is the Bears 'Sure Thing'. Everybody seems set that this guy is the QB the Bears will target in the second round. The big knock on him is lack of mobility, but if you watch the hightlight reels he has good pocket awareness and gets way from any number of rushes and sure sacks.

Flacco is the 4th rated QB on most boards

Flacco projects late first round, but more likely early second.

Per NFL Draft Countdown:

Strengths: Has excellent size and a big frame...Has an outstanding arm and can make all the throws...Quick delivery...Pretty accurate...Nice touch and timing...Throws a terrific deep ball...Really smart and a hard worker....Tough and durable...Had a fantastic senior campaign...Solid leadership ability...Very productive...Still has some upside. Weaknesses: Is not very mobile...Will have some throws sail on him...He needs to clean up and refine his mechanics and footwork...Instincts in the pocket are questionable...Too confident in his arm and will force things...Does not have a lot of experience...Will have to adjust to a pro style offense..Hasn't played much against top competition. Notes: Name is pronounced ""flack-oh""...Father Stephen played football and baseball at the University of Pennsylvania....Began his college career at Pittsburgh where he redshirted and then served as Tyler Palko's backup...He transferred down a level in search of more playing time in 2005...Worked predominantly out of the shotgun with the Blue Hens...Not a finished product but an intriguing developmental signal caller with all the physical tools you look for...Has starting potential down the line.

EVEN. Joe Flacco has probably move up the boards as much as he is going to. His Combine results solidified his spot, but didn't give him a boost. The only way he likely gets picked in the first round is if a team is high on him and is sure the Bears are going to take him.

I think the Chicago Bears would be the perfect opportunity for him," Kiper said, "because, in Chicago, they need a quarterback who can cut through that wind and play in those conditions. "And Flacco can do that. He's got the best arm of any quarterback in this draft. He flicks his wrist and the ball jumps out of his hand. --Mel Kiper

I couldn't be more sold on Flacco
But I'm a little nervous that he might get snapped up in round 2 before we pick.  The Dolphins, Chiefs, Falcons, Jets, Ravens, Bills, and Panthers could all possibly take him, depending on if one of them take Ryan or Brohm in round 1.  If that's the case, and the Bears get wind of it during the draft, would we trade up?  Or would we just pick Henne or Woodson?

I think they have to.
(total speculation) I wouldn't be surprised if the Bears have decided Flacco was their QB of the future. They've probably convinced themselves that all the others fall short, and he's perfect for them.

Anyway, I'd be surprised if he lasted to the Bears in the second round so I do think they to get him they will need to, and will, trade up to get him. I sort of hope they do just so that we'll know they aren't always moving down in the draft.

Flacco
For those that didn't watch the combine, I think people underestimate him as not having much mobility.  IIRC, he ran a sub 5.00 40.  He's going to be fine and I hope the Bears do draft him, just not too early.  The only problem is hoping that nobody trades up and beats us to him.

I know the mobility challenge
at the College All Start thing in Hawaii isn't the end all be all, but Flacco had the best time, so he must be able to move some.

You're right
I saw that too, and he looked really good in those drills.  I hope we land him.

If Flacco is projected to be a 1st rounder...
Then the bears should move down in the 1st round to get him not go up Tyger.  Everyone knows that Ryan and Brohm are going to go ahead of Flacco, so if the bears are that concerned about him going late in the first or early in the second and missing him, then they should move DOWN in the first to get him and then they may get a higher second round or another 3rd round pick.  I am all for getting him though with his size and arm strength especially.  We need a big QB that won't get hurt.

The value chart says the
14 pick is worth 1100.  The 32nd pick is worth 590.

To move back we'd have to negotiate with people who also have late 2nd rounders.  That means we'd either have to take Flacco with the late 1st and stay were we are in the 2nd.

If we get a few seconds or thirds, maybe some leverage to still move up and get a guy like Albert.  Though not we are just getting all ahead of ourselves.

i want that first rounder right there
I have no problem with trading up in the second though.

Agreed.
If they got Flacco, they're drafting O-linemen at 46 and the 60-64. You're hoping you get lucky there. I'd rather give up the second-round they have now and a future 2nd/3rd/4th/whatever and get that mid-first o-lineman and early 2nd QB. Or something like that.

I disagree.
See below in reply to Chad. I'd rather take two "Top 14 - 35" talents than three 35-65 talents. Doubt that makes any sense.

FWIW
Just came across this on eastcoastsportsnews.com, which in my opinion is the best mock draft site on the net.  Pretty interesting.

http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com/AlsHotNwsRms.html

This is the best mock draft site on the web.  He always has hot rumors section updated and his mocks are pretty good.

It might be a great site
but seriously how about a web designer.  YOu mention the problem.  If you didn't say where, I'd have to scroll through the whole thing, I'd be liable to go blind with that setup.

Agree
It's a little confusing if you don't know where to go.
