Bears and Devin Hester In Contract Talks

With his increasing involvement in the Bears offense and his potential as a #1 receiver, the Bears have decided to put their money were their mouth is and start work on a new contract for the Pro Bowl kick returner.

The Bears also have made the decision to start throwing more to Devin Hester. Money, that is. The team has held informal discussions with Hester's agent, Eugene Parker, about a new deal and it will move to the forefront along with efforts to extend the contracts of defensive tackle Tommie Harris, kicker Robbie Gould and, potentially, defensive end Mark Anderson. The idea is to ensure young core players are in place well beyond 2010.

Potential
I'd still prefer someone with more than just potential playing WR for the bears. Hester, Bradley, Davis, Hass its all potential and not much proven ability.
I Don't neccessarily need Randy Moss (I mean who's gonna throw to them) but a solid #2 or #3 that you know what you have not just potential.

Not yet
Hester shouldn't get number one money. He hasn't proven anything yet.

id say
hes proven enough to me that he deserves to be paid as a #1 reciever based solely on what he does as a returner

by Jbasic89 on Mar 2, 2008 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

hardly
a #1 receiver scores 15 times a year...hester has pitched in 7 or 8 a year. i wouldn't mind #3 money with a little more due to what he pitches in during the return game.

Don't be a retard.
Only three players* scored 15 TD's this past year**, so... there's only 3 No. 1 WR's in all the NFL, huh? I know I'm an asshole around here, but seriously, how hard is it to look stuff up before you type shit out? Seriously. Take an extra 30 secs.

So please, be mad at me for calling you out and say bad things back about me. Or apologize to everyone here for insulting our intelligence. Your choice.

If Hester could score 10 TD's a year between returning and receiving, he should be paid No. 1 money, in my opinion. I don't think he can, though, because the extra demands of being a bigger part of the offense. I think he could score 6-8 TD's between the two of them, which would put him in the Top 30 among all with receiving TD's (WR/TE) That's deserving of No. 2 money now, imo.
*Two of which hold NFL records and will be among the best WR's ever (Top 25, at a minimum).

**None last year. None the year before. Two the year before that.

Dude
can't you just make your point with out calling someone a retard?

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Mar 2, 2008 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

no big
he makes a good point, i was rushed in my response and didn't take the time to check to see how many scores some of the receivers put up over the past season. that being said, my point still remains, i don't think he should be paid #1 receiver money...although, i don't really know what type of money that is now that we have seen berrian and porter cash in pretty well without having much success.

by lopey986 on Mar 2, 2008 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

I agree 100%
If I thought he could score 8-10 TD's between returning and receiving, I'd think about it. But I don't think he can... at least for a year or two. If he becomes a full-time WR, I think his return TD's will "suffer" to the tune of 2 or 3 a year. And I can't see him putting up 5-7 TD's as a WR when only 30-40 in the entire NFL do it every year. I could, however, see him getting 6-8 between the two if he's "only" the slot receiver playing 1/3 - 1/2 the offensive downs. I'd pay him "No.2" money (if, as you said, we could figure that out) with that plan/hope in mind.

i know he has a point
i was saying that he didn't need to call you or anyone a retard.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Mar 3, 2008 12:48 AM CST up reply actions

No.
I'm an asshole when people spread false information. I'm a really nice guy otherwise.

here's a tip
you actually sound smarter and more informed when you correct people without belittling them personally.

first unwritten rule of internet chat is that the first to call names loses.

Fortunately, I'm not worried about winning.
I'm not keeping scratches on my wall. I know that stuff concerns you, but not me.

I didn't call him a retard. I said he was acting like one. There's a difference.

'don't be a retard'
spin it anyway you want.

I am saying that your point would be much stronger if you didn't use language like that.  If you just posted your thoughts without the angry tone, you wouldn't come off as a jerk and people would be more inclined to listen to you.

You had a good point.  Just stick with it.

They are not going to pay him...
What Berrian or other WRs got. They are going to bump up the contract to something that resembles what a starting WR makes, I'd guess something around $4mil/yr with plenty of up-front money.
They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That's* the *Chicago* way!

this is how you retain your core players
I give the Bears credit for trying to lock up their players before their FA years - you show your appreciation before your back is to the wall. While not every player may give you a "hometown discount" if they elect to go to FA, at the very least you'll be viewed favorably around the rest of the league. I am concerned that they're going to break the bank for Harris, whose leg injury is still not all the way back from two seasons ago.

what about a trade
i heard cincy wanted a 2nd round pick for Chad Johnson. hester is still a year or two from being a #1 and I think Johnson could be a good fit. His energy and route running could be just what bradley and hester need to learn in order to get to the next level.

by rahulsriram on Mar 2, 2008 6:30 PM CST reply actions

I wish
If cincy only wants a 2nd bears should pull the trigger now. I would give up a 1st for this guy, he would open the field so much for hester in the slot, like moss did for welker.

by VAbear311 on Mar 2, 2008 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

That's true
only if the Bears find themselves an offensive coordinator worth a damn, otherwise we'll have all kinds of wasted potential.  Again.

by mikebdot on Mar 2, 2008 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

Unless the Bears find a #1 QB.....
Chad Johnson will be wasted here and if he's not being used to his potential he'll be a disrupting figure for the team which is why Cincy is willing to get rid of him.

Now if you think Rex or Kyle or Flacco or whoever can be great with the "ocho cinco" by all means give them a first rounder.  Personally I'd look elsewhere.

by The Ghost of Rusty Lisch on Mar 3, 2008 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

where did you
hear they only wanted a 2nd round pick? not being an ass just curious.

by Jbasic89 on Mar 3, 2008 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

not to mention
he could open up things for greg olsen, kind of like the cowboys with t.o and witten.
