No Mendenhall In The First

Ok fellas, this is full of rumors and sources saids, but it is out there.

Some believe the Cedric Benson's career may be at stake due to this recent surgery.  Obviously, the Bears aren't letting anything out and won't until they know for sure or have seen him work out in training camp.

The interesting part of this is that it is said that the Bears will draft a running back, but likely not until the 3rd round.  This brings our OL/QB scenario back to the top of the list.

The story goes on to say that if Darren McFadden were to fall to #14, the Bears would consider changing their plans.  Firstly, there is no way McFadden falls that far unless something happens.   The question is if say he got to around 9 or 10, which still seems unlikely, would the Bears move up to get him before other teams?

What is your take on McFadden?  Would you be cool with the Bears moving up 5 or so spots if they could nab him?

I would rather see
them either stay where they are or move down a few slots and grab Jonathan Stewart.  I think he is a better every down back and his character is a lot better than the questionable character of McFadden.  So what I am saying is that I would rather see them gain an extra pick and still get a top five back in this years draft rather than losing a pick to get a the top back in the draft with questionable character and if you get McFadden in the city of Chicago there's no telling how stupid he will get.  Obviously I think Mendenhall is a great choice as well, but I would still rather see the bears get an extra pick out of the deal and still get Stewart, because you know that if Mendenhall is still on the board after 14 then either detroit or arizona will grab him at 15 or 16.  My only concern is that if that happens then detroit gets mendenhall and arizona may turn around and grab stewart at 16, but then again stewart's stock might drop a little bit because of that surgery, so who knows.  That's the beauty of the draft is the guessing.

I like Mendenhall
but I would endorse moving back getting whoever is on the board later be it Felix Jones or whatnot and pick up the extra pick.  We did so little in free agency, the more quality players we bring in the better.

I totally agree
I'd love if we moved down a bit and took Stewart. I think when it's all said and done he's going to emerge as the best back in this draft. While McFadden would also be a fantastic player to get, there's no way he's slipping past #6. So the Bears moving up to get him just won't happen.

Amusingly enough, NFL.com has analysis of draft prospects, with a paragraph about who each prospect compares to in the NFL. Stewart is compared to LaDanian Tomlinson, which would be nice, and Mendenhall is compared to............. Cedric Benson. Ouch...

I concur
I would rather move down than up.  There are too many RB's in the draft this year to warrant that move.  If we can trade down, grab an extra pick, and still land Stewart or Felix Jones then that's a win-win if you ask me.

I really feel like...
...Mendenhall is going to be a special pro.  I honestly think he has the highest floor and second highest ceiling to McFadden.  Mendenhall the most explosive between the tackles runner in the draft.     I also feel very strongly that he the most complete back in the draft.  He has virtually no wear and he's completely healthy.  I can definitely see some similarities to Benson.  Mendenhall has similar size and can run over people.  That's where it ends though.  Benson's speed, hands, blocking, and character are all inferior, to say the least.

For the record, I don't bleed orange and blue. I went to Western.  There are experts/scouts/etc. that believe Mendenhall is the best back in this draft.  Right now, I agree.  I actually feel like he's roughly a half-round better of a prospect than McFadden, mostly based on their floors in terms of potential.

Also...
...I did a Mock Draft the other day and I actually think McFadden could easily fall out of the top ten.  Odds are, I'm going to sound like and idiot or a complete genius for saying this at the end of April.  I do think it's entirely possible, though.

The thing about McFadden falling
is we cannot account for trades.  Say San Diego moves up and gets a team that would have taken McFadden, then falling out of the top 10 is a possibility.

That would be ideal for us.  A team like Dallas that is known to covet McFadden, but not want to pay the price to move into the top ten  might be looking to move up to around our spot and take him.  Don't think it is going to happen, but could.

offensive line
The Bears need 2 new starters right now on the O-line.  Whatever they do, this needs to get done.  Staying put is one way to do it.  Trading down is another.  If they want to move up, it should ONLY be to grab the elite tackle they need.

Lunch Pal Workingman Offensive Lineman First
We can find "hero" running backs and wide receivers in the later rounds!

Angelo is not changing his modus operandi
of never moving up in the first round for a reportedly bad character guy. There are so many draft needs this may clearly be the year to move down and amass more picks. Stewart's injured toe didnt stop him from having an incredible Combine showing and impressively demonstrates his ability to play through injury. Offensive Tackle is so high up on the needs list there is little chance they do not select an OT with #14, if they keep it.

I think...
I would rather see a stud OL at 14 and then a sleeper back in the third round, be that the guy from East Carolina or someone else. Maybe you do move down and get Stewart I would be ok with that too.

who knows
I still think Beekman will be one of our starters and before everyone says "why didnt he start last year", well Im saying for the same reason running backs and quarterbacks sit the first year or so, just to get experience before theyre thrown in the pile. But I think Id be happiest if we traded down, got an extra pick out of it, and that way we can still address all needs w/ the first 3 rounds. QB, WR, RB, OL, DT, and maybe even a safety.  But who knows how JA works, his  ideas are a mystery, we'll never guess what he will do until draft day.

I'll give the Bears props for 1 thing
their recent history (outside of Benson) does suggest they'll get most of their picks signed right away.

I've been hearing...
according to some draft analysts (I'm sure you've all heard them) some people don't think very highly of McFadden. A lot of scouts have him really high, obviously, and some not so much. A few scouts don't put him as the top RB in the draft or in the top 25 at all (some guy on FSR said that). I still don't know, honestly. He is really fast, but I like Mendenhall too as a more complete NFL back. McFadden is no Adrian Peterson. Not to mention, apparently, he does have some Travis Henry type "character issues". I doubt he'll fall, but anything is possible.

Bad Idea
For the Bears, there is no point to draft two of their top draft choices for Darren McFadden because all he will do is run into a wall, no matter how good he is. No running back is good enough to run behind a bad offensive line. Just look at Larry Johnson. The Bears should keep their #14 pick and draft either Ryan Clady or Chris Williams. At least one of them should fall to the #14 pick. Even if Rashard Mendenhall or Brian Brohm is there, they should pass up on them.

If the Bears want McFadden, they would probably have to trade their 1st and 3rd or 4th round picks. They need to keep that 3rd round pick for a running back or wide receiver. The Bears' 2nd pick should be used for Joe Flacco, even if the Bears have to trade up to get him. Flacco is worth it if the Bears can draft a solid offensive tackle. The Bears first three picks should be an OT, QB, WR, or RB.

Finally
a voice of reason.  People just don't understand how important O lineman are.  Sure, Mendenhall would be a great pick, if we had a good offensive line.  Fact is, we don't.  I fault the Bears for not addressing the oline in previous drafts or free agency.
