Cloak and Dagger Draft Style- Joe Flacco and Andre Woodson Workouts

Be sure to get in on the 4th Annual WCG Mock Draft.  We still need participants.

The worst kept secret in all of sports right now is that the Bears want Delaware QB Joe Flacco.  Not a single pick in the top 10 is more of a lock than the Bears drafting Flacco in the second.

But if you recall before the off season really kicked off the name most attached to the Bears was Kentucky QB Andre Woodson.  Due to a poor Senior Bowl showing and not working out at the combine Woodson has seen his stock drop to as low as the third round.

Recently, both Delaware and Kentucky had their Pro Days.  You can bet that Chicago was at Flacco's, but they were one of seven teams that did not send a rep to Woodson's workout.

I am currently putting the over/under on us actually getting Flacco at 30%.  I think somebody is going to jump over us and get him late first or with one of the first picks of the second.

I do however have a thoery.  It is a rather disturbing theory, but a theory nonetheless.  I think the Bears are laying down a league best smoke screen.  I think they are so hot on Andre Woodson that they think if they ignore him completely nobody he might still be around by the time the third round comes.

This is just a theory and I pray to Papa Bear himself that there is absolutely no truth to it, but it is currently floating through my head right now, so if it by some chance happened you heard it hear first and Mel Kiper Jr. can bow down to me.

Who the hell...
Is Andrew Woodson?  Change your title!

by Chad on Mar 7, 2008 12:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I am working
with some serious fat fingers today.  I hit the w every single time I wrote his name.  I just happens that the one I missed was in the title.

That's hilarious, WCG.
If only. Lucky for me, I didn't watch the senior bowl or the combine (except for a short bit with RB's) so if the Bears do take Woodson, I can pretend he's still great.

It's amazing that at the end of the regular season, he was still being touted as a Top 15 pick with "perhaps the most potential" of the Big 3. If the Top 5 were Ryan, Brohm, Woodson, Henne and Flacco, I'd be least excited about Henne, but would be satisfied with any. I think they're in a good position at this point.

I want Flacco
Strongest arm, tallest. I am excited about him but I know its the Bears and I shouldn't ge tmy hopes too high. But come on, he's 6'6" while we got Shrimp Rex under center. I'd be fine with Henne. But seriously for ONCE in the history of the Bears we actually need to SIT the rook instead of saying we're going to sit the rook and then throw him in in week 6.

The problem is
we are working with two almost unknown quantities.

We have seen Grossman play lights out, then he sucks, then he plays average and we give him another year.

Orton has shown signs, but we still don't know if he can play at this level.  We need more than 175 yards, 1TD and 1INT, especially with this running game.

Whoever we draft could very well start this year.

Flacco - 1st Rounder?
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/Note_to_Eagles_Sheppard_should_remain_with_the_flock.html

found it on Rotoworld, but says that at least one scout thinks he's the best QB in the draft and probably put himself in the first round.

Welcome to the Bears, Chad Henne!!

Flacco 1st round
If Mendenhall is their at 14, what if we trade our 14th and our late 3rd round pick to Dallas for their 2 1st rounders?  We can then draft the best available LT and Flacco in the first, best available RB/Wr in the 2nd and 3rd?  Does that work for trade values with those picks?  What does everybody think?
GO BEARS!!!!!

by McRipper on Mar 7, 2008 1:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Their two first
rounders (22,28) are worth 1440 points.  Our 14th is worth 1100.  If we use our late third rounder (91) the points would be 1236.  If we use the earlier one (76) the points would be 1310.  So the numbers don't workout exactly.  If Dallas wanted fair value, we might have to throw in a later rounder, but for Dallas to want to move up there must be somebody they really want, so maybe they would eat the difference.

I don't think it is likely, but in theory it probably would work.

I've been thinking the same thing
As mentioned, it would all depend on Dallas, but if they were up for it, I think it would be a good move.

Not bad
I posted my previous comment before seeing this--if Mendenhall is indeed there at 14 we'd have lots of leverage.

Say the Texans at 18 or the Eagles at 19 want him, but think the Lions or Cardinals will take him first. To go from 14 to 18 is a 200-point swing, which would net us their third-round pick (~180 points) in addition to their first-rounder.

In your scenario, Flacco might be a good fit at Dallas' lowest first-round pick (#28), but the problem is Angelo likes to trade down for MORE picks, and trading with Dallas would LOSE us a pick, most likely.

Depends how Angelo handles it
Our 14 plus a third and lets just say a 6th to make numbers even.

Their two firsts.  So we lose one second day pick, but we get a first.  We can either trade one to pick up more than the 6th or we can use both 1sts and trade back in the third.  There is always tons of movement in the 3-4 rounds.

How About?
We trade our 14th for San Fran's 29th and 39th.  Someone suggested it on the Bear's site, it projected out to a fairly even trade points wise and I believe we could have Flacco at 29. Any thoughts?

SF Trade
Chicago filed tampering charges against the Niners regarding Briggs.  That might put a strain on the relationship between the two teams.  Maybe not.

You're right that the points work, I think we might need to toss in our 5th rounder to gget it within 10 points or so

Not a bad idea
I think we'd be buying low on Woodson, who I think is better than he's looked this year.

Better than buying high on Henne, who had exactly ONE great game all year, and is clearly riding the Brady coattails.

One (unrelated) prediction I've heard is that Angelo's banking on trading down a few spots in the first to pick up an extra third. With three thirds, he can grab at least one of each at WR, RB, QB and OT in the first three rounds. Not such a bad idea, since the good offensive linemen are pretty bunched up, quality-wise, after the best 2 or 3.

The problem is the depth in this draft
Unless somebody falls so in love with Mendenhall that they are willing to pass over Stewart, Johns, Hart, Rice, plus a few others or they have to have a linemen even though there are tons of good ones this year, I just don't know who is going to want to move up.

I think the only real way we are going to move back is if somebody starts slipping.  If like some are predicting Dorsey starts falling, somebody might deal to get him.  Clady is high on a lot of boards, it is possible if he is available at 14 somebody might want to move up.  I just don't know how likely it is.

Woodson is the prize qb
Woodson had over 9600 yards in basically 2 yrs and a freaking 25 interceptions.  He played 4 but hardly any the first 2.  He's tall and he is an accurate deep thrower.  He is football smart. He called almost all of the last plays when Kentucky upset the LSU Tigers in triple overtime and the guy has character. He holds the NCAA record for somewhere around 325 consecutive throws without and interception.  He played in the SEC.  Most of these guys don't have a clue what it's like to actually have to have pressure brought against them like a pro-team size that are built like LSU's line or Georgia's. Colt Brennan was lunch against the SEC, he hasn't ever seen pressure like that in his division.  Yeah he can perform well at the combine but he folds like a lawn chair in front of these big defense's.  The Senior Bowl is a joke.  I urge any person to skip it, to have some moron like SF's Martz try to teach these guys a West Coast offense in 5 days and then execute it and have timing with wide receivers is a load of bull.  It's tough enough at the Pro Bowl and these guys have been doing this for years. Woodson's o-line sucked, they didn't protect him worth squat, reminded me of the movie Remember the Titans when the the guy was never blocking and was always letting him through to flatten his qb. Sounds like he may have had a little help make him look bad situation, cause they sure didn't protect him.  Seems awful funny that another black quarterback can't get no respect. Favre didn't get drafted till the 3rd, Brady till the 6th.  Maybe when Woodson has got his ring he'll be like Tayshaun Prince after he won with the Pistons and he said, "I'd like to thank the other 25 teams who passed me up."  Wonder why you hardly ever see Duke players contribute on the starting 5 for the championships.  Antoine Walker did with Miami, Nazr Mahammed did with San Antonio,       Tayshaun Prince did with the Pistons, and it looks like Rajon Rondo just may be part of the Celtics if they continue their streak. Jared Lorenzen who was Eli Manning's back-up qb got a ring too. Anyway I hope the best for Andre because he is a great guy and I hope you end up with who you want, but just know that Andre is a first class act and a strong leader.

Minor correction
Favre was drafted in the second round and played at Southern Mississippi.  Probably would have gotten drafted higher if he played for Miami or Florida St.  Even Ole Miss.  You can't fault NFL teams for not thinking that he'd be that good.

Also, what do UK basketball players have to do with Andre Woodson?  Some how Kentucky breeds winners?  How about Rex Chapman?  Didn't UK basketball nearly get the death penalty?

This is football not basketball.

Draft choices analyst pick-bah hum bug
Don't have a clue about Rex Chapman, before I came to be a Kentucky fan and am not a particular fan of him so I don't know his history.  The only thing that bugs the crap out of me is that Mel Kiper keeps rearranging his qb 1to 5, he's been all over the map, and he's even dropped Brohm now to 4th and he had Woodson at 5th and he isn't even on the radar.  People beat down and give Ben Rothlisberger no respect either, but that's fine, he's got a ring and is the youngest qb to ever win a sb, maybe his sb performance was sub-par but his performance to get them there was off the charts.  He ranks right behind Brady and in front of Manning this year.  When they get him some protection on the 0-line he'll be even better.  He matured alot this year and has become his teams leader. I think analysts are like a-holes, or opinions, everyone's got one and they usually aren't too much on the money either.

Big Ben
Who ever said anything about Roethlisberger?

by Chad on Mar 7, 2008 8:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

wait...
Roethlisberger was better than Manning this past year?

Maybe Eli, but you surely are not talking about Peyton, right?

Being a Steeler fan I have listened to all
the crap about how Ben doesn't deserve his contract he just signed. He's not that good. If his motorcycle accident wouldn't have messed up the beginning of his third season he was on the roll for an awesome record for a qb.  And I'm sick of how they are always dogging on Woodson, just seems like none of my qb's get any respect. Just venting.

I like Roethlisberger a lot
He would have been a great Chicago Bear.  He's the sort of player that would have been a Chicago hero.  Too bad that Steelers got him.

Big Ben 2nd behind Brady in front of Peyton
http://www.helium.com/items/826588-quarterbacks-werent-about-statistical

Big Ben had more touchdowns, less interceptions, his passer rating was 104.1 and Peyton's was 98.0.
I'm not saying by any means that Ben is a better qb than Peyton, just last year his numbers were better and he was ranked second. Peyton has had 4 perfect passer ratings in his career, Ben has had 3, and Tom Brady 1. Ben had those numbers dispite being sacked 47 times so you can guess what the steelers are looking for in the draft. Have a good day everbody and keep warm.
