Joe Flacco Is A Pipe Dream For The Bears

Be sure to get in on the 4th Annual WCG Mock Draft.  We still need participants.

Delaware QB Joe Flacco was so impressive at his Pro Day work out that one AFC scout says he will go in the first round.  But wait it gets better.

There are some saying teams have him ranked above Matt Ryan.  Matt Ryan on some mocks is projected as the overall #1 pick, yet Flacco is higher?

I predicted Flacco would go in the first just due to people trying to get him before Chicago or even Miami, but now for the Bears to get him they might have to use the #14 on him.  Unreal!

So now I have to pose the question, is he worth it to you?  Would you take  him over Clady/Baker/Otah/Williams or Rashard Mendenhall?

What's more if you are against Flacco at 14, what QB would you like the Bears to take?  Michigan QB Chad Henne would be the likely next target, but I know there are as many here that don't like him as there are those who do.

Does this mean my Andre Woodson theory is going to bear fruit?

My ranking would be...
...Brohm, Ryan, Henne, Woodson, Flacco. At least in order of "safeness". Maybe switch Henne and Woodson. sure, Brohm or Henne might not end up as good as Flacco, but I don't see how Brohm, Ryan and Henne can be busts. I'll defer to the scouts for the rapidly-falling Woodson. If it were my money, and I were the Bears GM right now, I'd go for what I consider the surer thing. I guess I'd rather have the guy who can make every throw under 25 yards and has consistently done it, than gamble for the one that can throw it 70 yards w/ a crow-hop.

no way id take
flacco over mendenhall at 14. flacco could be seeing a jay cutler like move up the first round. they are very similar type qbs as both are big guys with laser arms.

Flacco's move
reminds me of how everyone fell in love with Kyle Boller.

At some point, people are going to remember he played at Delaware.

His stats are comparable to Woodson's, except Woodson played against ranked teams every week, and Flacco played against Rhode Island and Northern Iowa. And if you look at his highlight tape, he throws behind his receivers a lot---on his highlight tape.

If we could get Woodson in the second round, that would be pretty fortunate. I'd certainly take that over Flacco.

Not too bad
I guess a one-year deal isn't so bad. I have very low expectations, tho.

Lineman, please
I'm not a scout, but I'm wary of one-year wonder, workout heroes like Flacco. See: Kyle Boller. Or, even better, my Illini homie Jeff George.

If we could get Flacco with our second-round pick, I say go for it, but let another team pay for the hype with a higher pick.

For the record, I'd say no to Mendenhall at 14 too. The difference between a mid-first-round RB and a 4th-round-RB is much smaller than the difference between his OT counterparts.

Football is won at lost at the line, and there's no better proof of that than this year's Super Bowl winners.

I wouldn't complain even if Angelo spent his first FIVE picks on linemen.

Jeff George
Is a great 'what could have been'.  He was not a case of a guy who looked good in college and was a bust in the pros just cause he wasn't that good - like a Tim Couch or Cade McNown.  George was a headcase.  A less sever Ryan Leaf.  All the talent in the world but a total headcase.  George had a few years that we as Bears fans, would kill for out of the QB position.

Revisionist history
Jeffy had a decent career at Illinois, a huge bowl game, and an incredible Combine. He went from a late first-day pick to top of the heap based on one game and an impressive workout.

He actually had a few good years in the pros, but they were few and far between.

this from a Cowherd fan
Jeff George was awesome at Illinois and nearly took them to the Rose Bowl.

They guy had a cannon for an arm and had the 'quick release' that they always look for.

I'm not saying he was going to be as good as Dan Marino, but A. he generally played on crappy teams and b. was a headcase.  He was a jerk and didn't dedicate himself they way he should have.  He would have been a pretty good player if he applied himself more.

Holy shit
The bears did sign Brandon Lloyd to a one year deal.  WTF is going on here?  I am glad to see them bringing in a free agent, but Brandon Lloyd of all receivers is confusing.  Oh well, I guess Jerry Angelo really is trying to be as cheap as possible.

meh i think lloyd will be a good number 2
the situation he was brought into in washington was no good. i think its good to finally get rex some recievers who can actually catch a ball n make plays. it pisses me off even thinking about all those balls rex threw up to berrian where he either stopped running his route, did nothing to attempt to try n catch the ball or knock it out of the defenders hands. i think with lloyd being back with turner it could help him mature a little more too. and with a one year deal it might motivate him to put up some numbers this year n earn himself a nicer contract next year.

Funny thing is
If you are correct about him putting up decent numbers warranting a nicer contract next year we all know that the bears won't pay it.  Some other team will throw more money at him that the bears won't ever be willing to pay.

Sweet
Now we have two No. 2's! Brandon Lloyd is barely half the receiver Berrian is. At least they didn't overpay, though.

I can't believe they'd go after any more FA WR's now. So they get: Booker, Lloyd, Bradley, Hester, rookie. I suppose it has potential to be decent if Lloyd and Bradley breakout, but it could also be horribly, horribly bad.

Let's not forget the two best WR's will be new to the Ron Turner's "system" and that the gameplan changes depending on the QB. I expect a lot of ugly routes next year.

OTOH, as I said...
...they're still pretty young so at least there's that chance to be good.

Brandon Lloyd
Is Mr. Drop.  The funny thing is he makes the most unbelievable highlight catches but can't catch a hitch or a slant.
GO BEARS!!!!!

I know I'm in the minority...
...but I'm not too concerned with drafting an early QB. Given that so many early-rounders at the position turn out to be busts, and some of the biggest stars were late picks or, hell, undrafted, I don't see grabbing a guy like Flacco as a high priority. I think Orton and Grossman can be fine. I'd like to see a QB picked up late- no earlier than round 4- and let him develop behind Orton and Grossman.

Along with that, in my fantasy scenario, in our first round we don't take anybody, because we've traded that along with one of our thirds for Marion Barber III. Given that we're likely to draft a RB in the first anyway, at least if Mendenhall is available and we don't burn it on Flacco, it just makes sense to me to take an ideal starter for the team who's a proven player, especially since all we really -lose- is a third round pick, and we have two as-is.

So I don't care much who we take as a QB- someone with a good head on his shoulders and some patience to develop into something.

i'm there with ya
i'd wait on a qb, grossman and orton are still under 27 (which is considered a breakout age for the qb position in the nfl) and have plenty of upside. if they plan on drafting a qb i'd wait on one...someone like henne who has very good football intelligence.

also, whoever flacco has in his pre-draft camp deserves a raise because i don't know how you go from playing at deleware st. and being projected as a 3rd or 4th rounder to moving into the top 15, but that is a hell of a publicity team he has.

i hope we stay away from QB until round 3
at the earliest. we have a few major areas that need fixing, but if we do that, i think we could be a good team next year. QB is pretty low on my list. take one of the LTs at 14, grab a WR or safety in round 2 (or guard if we don't grab one in free agency), a RB with one of the 3rd round picks and then maybe a QB with the second 3rd rounder. i think we could get a very good guard or WR in the 2nd round - offensive linemen and wideouts are very deep this year in terms of talent. the line is by far the most important thing to upgrade - tom brady would have all types of trouble behind last year's bears offensive line, and LT would probably average 3.6 ypc.
