Contract Talks With Tommie Harris Broke Off

The Bears, Tommie Harris and his agent Drew Rosenhaus have left the table, but that is not actually a bad thing.  They didn't leave at an impasse or on bad terms, they just needed to step away for awhile.

It is believed that the Bears have offered Harris more money than Tommie Kelly was overpaid in Oakland.  The deal would make Harris the highest paid defensive tackle in the league.

Harris wants to play in Chicago, but still wants to be paid as an elite player and have one more shot at free agency when he turns thirty.

So wait...
The Bears have actually offered a contract that is TOO GOOD? That doesn't make sense from Harris' prospective. I think he and Drew need to realize that they can't have it both ways.

As the contract says
it could be the way the money is deal out.  If it is similar to Briggs contract a lot of the money is in work out bonuses.  This gives the Bears the option of letting go a player and not paying.

It also might have to do with the number of years on the deal.  If Harris wants to be a free agent again at 30.  I don't think this would be a big deal since the deal would be for 6 years.

Right.This is what people...
...don't understand about football contracts. It's not in the total money, it's in the guaranteed. In all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if the Bears offered a back-loaded contract w/ a lot of money. If Harris took it, Great! they have a guy locked up they can cut if he stays injury-prone. If not, oh well, they'll just leak they offered him the richest d-tackle contract in the league and the ungrateful punk turned it down. (okay, not in those words, but don't be surprised if you see Larry Mayer writer that the Bears thought they offered a great contract)

It's the NFL: tell me what the guaranteed money is or don't tell me anything at all. (not towards you WCG, that's just a maxim)

Can't Believe It
Harris turned down the highest paid contract for a defensive tackle in the league? How much better can you get?

overrated
screw harris he's not as good as he thinks!
had 1 good season (superbowl year) & didn't even play that whole season.last year was good but not great...lets see him prove it over time..prove he's great at something other than jumping offsides 1 or 2 times every game..there are other tackles i would rather have than him...like the ones in minnesota...harris is to small to dominate
like sapp did.he either makes a big play or is pushed out of the play completely. not stout enough against run as it showed last year when bears were run over by more than a few backs.

They have Harris under control
for 2-3 more years if they use the franchise tag on him. If they can't sign im to a favorable contract now, there is no reason to lock him up given his injury history and the short lifespan of NFL players. If he's healthy and productive, he'll be well worth the franchise tag money, and if he's not healthy, they can cut bait whenever they want.
