Bears vs. 49ers- Game Thread

I wasn't really going to put up a game thread for a preseason game, but I needed a good place to put this stuff.  Besides, the game might actually be on in Chicago.

The game will be rebroadcast on the NFL Network Aug.15(Tuesday)at 3 p.m.  If you all are interested in having a game thread post open then to talk about it, let me know.

Here is a quick rundown of what is being said about this game.

Here is a list of the 5 offensive players the spotlight will be on the most.

Mark Bradley, 16, WR, Has looked alternately recovered and tentative because of last season's knee injury.

Rashied Davis, 81, WR, Was discovered playing Arena League in San Jose, needs to continue displaying toughness from slot.

Brian Griese, 14, QB, First crack to prove his surgically repaired knee is healthy and his knowledge of offense is sound.

P.J. Pope, 36, RB, Should finish with most rushing attempts in bid to land on practice squad--or intrigue another team.

J.D. Runnels, 48, FB, Has been lauded for knowing playbook better than most rookies and gets big opportunity with Bryan Johnson out.

Devin Hester will get the start at punt returner today.  Berrian is being kept out to nurse injuries.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub said he will watch Hester's decision-making process as closely as his catching ability. Speed isn't an issue; Hester has a 40-yard dash time of 4.36 seconds.

"The No. 1 thing is fielding the ball and making the right decision in doing so," Hester said. "I've been doing very well. I have to keep improving."

Finally, things to watch.

Coaches have been pleased with the steps made by free safety Chris Harris from last season -- he has looked better in coverage -- but his job is one that could change hands if second-round pick Danieal Manning has a big preseason. Turnovers are the name of the game, but Manning can't get caught way out of position, either, because he's still learning the system. This will be one to watch all month.
