The West Coast Offense was designed with a quarterback like Josh McCown in mind. A heady QB, that can manage the game, and make short quick throws. Jay Cutler brings the deep ball into play when he's under center, but McCown doesn't have that kind of arm.
Until we see how the TCO* operates with a backup QB, it's really hard to say with 100% certainty that any Bears players are definite must starts, so I'll go with my gut on my picks.
The offensive line is better than years past, the play calling is better than in years past, and the offensive skill players are better than in years past, so I tend to believe that Josh McCown will be able to efficiently run the Bears O this week.
Start 'Em
Matt Forte RB - Earlier this week head coach Marc Trestman made mention that he thought he needed to increase Forte's touches moving forward in the offense. Even though the Packers have a solid run defense, I think Trestman will call plays to get his tailback involved. McCown may be more willing to check stuff down to Forte, instead of going for the deeper pass like his predecessor. I'd expect about 25 touches for Forte this week.
Brandon Marshall WR - The Packers did a good job in bracketing Brandon Marshall last year. He only had 8 catches for 80 yards and a TD in two games last season. With a better group of receivers on the field, Green Bay may not be willing to roll coverage to Marshall as much as last year. I think they will play the Bears offense straight, and treat their receiving threats equally.
Martellus Bennett TE - A tight end can be a quarterbacks best friend, and the 6'6" Bennett can provide a good outlet for McCown. Factor in the fact that Green bay is allowing the 3rd most fantasy points to TEs and you have to play The Black Unicorn this week.
Sit 'Em
Alshon Jeffery WR - With six teams on their bye week this week, Jeffery will get a lot of fantasy starts regardless of my recommendation. I just feel that with the uncertainty surrounding the offense, that Marshall, Bennett, and Forte is enough on the Start side of things.
Be sure to check your match ups, and if Jeffery is your best bet, start him.
Chicago Bears Defense - In standard Yahoo scoring, the Bears defense has slipped down to 13th. They are giving up points and yards at an alarming rate, but are still taking the ball away. Devin Hester is also a candidate to pop one at any time, but I still would find another D to start this week. The Green Bay offense is real good, Aaron Rodgers is usually very smart with the ball, so unless you have no better option for your defense, give Chicago the week off.
Josh McCown QB - I nearly added McCown to my team this week to give him the start. My #1 QB is on a bye, and my #2 was Jay Cutler. While I'm hoping for a 300 yard passing day from the former high school football coach, I think we're better off waiting to see how he runs the offense before plugging him in as a fantasy starter.
For the record I'm rolling the dice with Oakland QB Terrelle Pryor this week.
What are your thoughts on the Bears' fantasy options this week?
