The first question that crosses your mind after reading the title here is "Defensive ends? But the Bears just spent a first round pick on Shea McClellin, have Corey Wootton, and have freaking Julius Peppers, All That Is Man still playing at a high level!" Unless you're Joe Cowley. But anyway.
Do I think the Bears are in position to draft a defensive end high in 2013? Absolutely not; however, I could see them making another play for a high caliber player who falls down the draft board a la Wootton in 2008. Wootton is on the final year of his rookie deal, and Peppers and Israel Idonije are both getting up there, so the position is in a good spot to be fully reloaded in the mid to late rounds.
(Plus, if we didn't do defensive ends, we'd really be ignoring completion of the series. Watch for the Kickers and Punters entry to come closer to the end, as well as the Punters Fantasy entry.)
So without further ado, let's delve into this year's defensive end class.
First Round Consideration: Ezekiel Ansah, BYU | Bjoern Werner, Florida State | Damontre Moore, Texas A&M | Alex Okafor, Texas | Margus Hunt, SMU | Datone Jones, UCLA | Sam Montgomery, LSU
Second Round Consideration: Corey Lemonier, Auburn | Tank Carradine, Florida State | John Simon, Ohio State | William Gholston, Michigan State
Third Round Consideration: Devin Taylor, South Carolina | Michael Buchanan, Illinois
Fourth Round Consideration: Stansly Maponga, TCU | Wes Horton, USC | Joe Kruger, Utah | Malliciah Goodman, Clemson
There's some decent talent in there. Despite being an Illinois grad, I like Buchanan, but I was just never really wowed by him to the point of demanding he be on my favorite NFL team. Carradine's ACL might depress his draft stock similar to Wootton, but his last memories of facing Florida are pretty sour.
What are some defensive ends you have in mind? Who would you want on the Bears?
