Henry Melton will play under the franchise tag in 2013

It's being reported that Chicago Bears Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton will not sign a long term deal, and he will play under the franchise tag for the 2013 season.

Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune is reporting the following;

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Henry Melton just confirmed to methat he won&#39;t get a new contract and will play under the one-year franchise tag this season.</p>&mdash; vaughn mcclure (@vxmcclure23) <a href="https://twitter.com/vxmcclure23/statuses/356789235048652801">July 15, 2013</a></blockquote>

The official deadline isn't until 3:00 pm Central time this afternoon, so technically there's a chance Henry Melton could still sign a long term deal with the Chicago Bears.

It's believed that Melton was seeking a five year deal, with between $18 - $20 million guaranteed.

Brad Biggs, also of the Chicago Tribune, dropped this interesting nugget on twitter;

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>With Melton on 1-yr deal, 3 of <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Bears&amp;src=hash">#Bears</a> top 6 2013 earners will be FA&#39;s after season: Cutler $8.97 mil, Melton $8.45 mil, Tillman $8 mil.</p>&mdash; Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) <a href="https://twitter.com/BradBiggs/statuses/356798819788267520">July 15, 2013</a></blockquote>

The other three top earning Bears, Jermon Bushrod, Brandon Marshall, and Julius Peppers.

Are you concerned with all the one year deals the Bears players are playing under this year?

If any other news breaks on the Melton situation, we'll be right here for you.
