Chicago Bears Injury Update: Henry Melton out for the year with a torn ACL

The Chicago Bears lost a key cog in the middle of their defensive line when Henry Melton went down with a torn ACL last night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bad news for the Chicago Bears today, as starting defensive tackle, and 2012 Pro Bowler Henry Melton, is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report.

Henry Melton came under fire by fans and the media after his ho-hum start to the season. He had just one tackle in week one, then 2 more the last two weeks for a total of five.

Week one was his first action after missing much of the preseason following a concussion, then week two against the Vikings he was doubled on more than half his snaps. He may not have had the stats, but the Vikes were sure cognizant of him.

Nate Collins is expected to be the starting three technique defensive tackle in Melton's place, and starting nose tackle Stephen Paea will continue rotating there as well.

The Bears could scour the street free agents or look to pluck a player from a teams practice squad. I'm not sure if Chicago GM Phil Emery would explore a trade, but if the price is right, you never know.

I would also expect rookie free agent DT Zach Minter to be active for the first time this Sunday.

Melton was playing under the 2013 franchise tag, so this could be the last we see of his as a Bear.

UPDATE: From Melton's agent.
