On the heels of the hiring of Special Teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers and today's needs about new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, as well as other confirmed moves and rumours which Lester covers here, the Chicago Bears have announced more additions to head coach John Fox's new staff.
Sam Garnes joins as the assistant coach for defensive backs, reprising the role's he filled for the past four seasons under Fox with the Denver Broncos. The former safety for the New York Giants (1997-2001) and New York Jets (2002-2003) has helped develop players such as 2014 Pro Bowlers T.J. Ward and Chris Harris, Jr. Incumbent defensive backs coach Jon Hoke has not yet been officially released; it's not inconceivable that Fangio may wish to retain him, with Garnes serving as his assistant.
Dave Magazu is another transplant from the Broncos, where he's served as the O-line coach under John Fox for the past four seasons; previously he coached tight ends and O-line for eight years with the Carolina Panthers. Notable names that he's coached to Pro Bowls include the Panthers' Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil, and the Broncos' Zane Beadles, Ryan Clady, and Louis Vasquez. You can find out more about his background in this September 2014 interview from the Broncos' official website.
Derius Swinton II joins as the assistant Special Teams coach from - wait for it - Denver, where he's spent the past two seasons in the same capacity. He reunites with Jeff Rodgers to re-form a tandem who led a special teams unit that was, if we're honest, not that good... will new GM Ryan Pace commit more resources to the third phase than Phil Emery did?
You can read more on these hires on the Chicago Bears' website. Just a new coach bringing in his own people, or do you have misgivings about Halas Hall becoming Mile High (or whatever they call their HQ) East?
