The Chicago Bears have announced the signing of safety Sherrod Martin and running back Daniel Thomas to one year contracts. Both players were working out at minicamp this week on a try out basis. In corresponding moves, the team waived kicker Jeremiah Detmer, quarterback Pat Devlin and tight end Jacob Maxwell.
Both Martin and Thomas are former 2nd round draft picks, with Martin being picked by Carolina in 2009 and Thomas being selected by the Dolphins in 2011.
Martin played in 13 games for the Jaguars last year, making 2 starts. In his 5 year career (he wasn't on a roster in 2013) he has appeared in 72 games with 38 starts, making 8 interceptions, 22 passes defended and 5 forced fumbles. He's also an experienced special teams player.
In 52 games and 3 starts, Thomas has rushed for 1,480 yards, adding 55 catches for 412 yards. Last year in Miami, Thomas had a career low 168 rushing yards in 12 games.
This flurry of roster moves leaves the Bears with one spot open. Could it be for one of the free agent offensive guards now that Kyle Long has been getting work at tackle?
Keep it locked on WCG for all the latest...
Head coach John Fox met the media at the conclusion of the three day minicamp.
Free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal met the media today and he talked about playing for Coach Fox.
Now here are a few nuggets from Twitter about minicamp.
I didn't note Thomas much over past 2 days, but hard to miss Martin's pick off tipped pass today. Nice ball skills. Also like length. #Bears

Thomas now biggest back on #Bears roster at 6-1, 235. Different kind of back, too, as a between-the-tackles north/south guy. Still only 27.

One of John Fox's messages to #Bears players as they break before camp: "I don't want to read about ya unless you win the lottery."

The Bears won't gather as a team again until they report for training camp in Bourbonnais on July 29th, with the first practice to take place on the 30th.
Here's some good news on the injury front...
#Bears coach John Fox indicates he expects WR Kevin White and LB Jon Bostic to be ready for start of training camp.

#Bears LB Shea McClellin: "What we need to get back to is the Monsters of the Midway...We haven't been that the last two years."

"I don't really feel pressure," said #Bears LB Shea McClellin when asked about his NFL future. "Pressure comes when you're not prepared."

Is it just me, or has Shea McClellin been getting a lot of ink this offseason?
I asked Pernell McPhee what his top personal goal is right now. "Shit, to get another ring." #Bears

McPhee has a ring from his time in Baltimore.
What are your thoughts now that the offseason program has concluded and what are you looking forward to come Bourbonnais?
