Fox and Pace press conference recap: White to PUP, Houston, Young ready to go

Bears head coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace met the media in Bourbonnais to kick off training camp. Here are the highlights

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Kevin White is beginning the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list with a shin injury. Bad news for the No. 7 overall pick.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Bears GM Ryan Pace is confident Kevin White&#39;s shin injury won&#39;t drag into the season. &quot;There&#39;s a long time before we play.&quot;</p>&mdash; Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) <a href="https://twitter.com/Rich_Campbell/status/626471576008044545">July 29, 2015</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bears?src=hash">#Bears</a> GM Ryan Pace tells us team just being smart w/Kevin White injury. Third string QB David Fales will also start camp on the PUP list with an illness.

Lamarr Houston and Willie Young are good to go but need to build up their football activities, "ease them in" says Fox.

In other injury news, Alan Ball is good to go as well.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pace: CB Alan Ball is full-go to start camp. He missed a lot of time in the spring.</p>&mdash; Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) <a href="https://twitter.com/Rich_Campbell/status/626474051247177728">July 29, 2015</a></blockquote>

Fox says that the first two days will be in shorts and that it's more of a build up period than in the old days of Oklahoma drills right off the bat. Keep in mind that Fox has preached a new training regimen and the Bears have hired a sports science coordinator.

Pace says he likes to get away for camp; gets coaching staff and team tighter. Fans who enjoy attending a free NFL event will like hearing that.

Fox concurred

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">John Fox cites the military when talking about why he wants to go away for training camp. Indeed, tackling and blocking needs work:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Fox on hitting/training camp: &quot;Once you put (pads) on, I&#39;ve always been a firm believer this league is about blocking and tackling.&#39;&#39;</p>&mdash; David Haugh (@DavidHaugh) <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidHaugh/status/626469121215954944">July 29, 2015</a></blockquote>

Fox says Kyle Long will indeed stay at guard.

"We're in a race, we're 0-0 and that's the approach we take, one day at a time." - John Fox with almost all the coaching cliches in one sentence.

Fox commended the players for staying out the news for the past five weeks, which cannot be said for Aaron Kromer. Fox added that staying healthy is a number one priority of camp.

Ryan Pace defended the signing of Ray McDonald, said he will never shy away from upgrading roster.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pace says always trying to upgrade roster. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bears?src=hash">#Bears</a></p>&mdash; Jake Bartelson (@JakeBartelson) <a href="https://twitter.com/JakeBartelson/status/626472093702602752">July 29, 2015</a></blockquote>
