What Coulda Been

With all the lamenting on the recent WCG boards in regards to Aaron Donald (and several others), I felt it necessary to give you the "What Coulda Been Bears" in regards to the current roster. Of course, I would not have felt this need if it weren’t for Down Bear Down’s recent post on the boards in the Den about how to best prepare for the draft.

"How to mentally prepare for the Bears' Draft:

Think about a player you really like and then come to the understanding that he’ll be picked right before our turn.

I would like to see a Bears "what could have been team" with all the draft picks that were picked right before us haha

To begin, let me set a few things straight. First off, I am not sticking with a current player, even if they are good. In other words, we are not taking Kyle Long in the draft, we are taking the player selected before him. Second, I am only considering trade ups. When the bears traded up this last year to select Floyd, I am also assuming they trade up to get the guy who was selected in front of them. Conversely, in round 2 when they traded down, it is assumed it was because the guy they wanted was selected just in front of their pick. In this last year’s draft, that gives us Jack Conklin in the 1st round and Sterling Shepard in the 2nd. Third, I will be going back to the 2010 draft only. The reason for this is that the NFL claims that the average career is about 6 years (for players who make a club's opening day roster in their rookie season). Lastly, this is wholly a bit of fun. I don’t really think the front office would actually have taken some of these guys. It is just a list.

With that in mind, I give to you, your 2016 "coulda been" Bears!

ROOKIES

As stated above, Jack Conklin (2016 round 1) is "anchoring" our LT spot. And the rest of your 2016 rookies?

Rd 2 – WR Sterling Shepard

Rd 3 – S Darian Thompson

Rd 4 – WR Malcolm Mitchell

Rd 5 – RB Paul Perkins (sadly we don’t take Jordan Howard)

Rd 6 – TE Jerell Adams

Rd 7 – WR Demarcus Ayers

SOPHOMORES

DE Leonard Williams, DE Preston Smith, WR Jaelen Strong, WR Jamison Crowder, OLB Martrell Spaight, CB Tevin Mitchel

VETERANS (by year)

2014 – DT Aaron Donald, OLB Jeremiah Attaochu, G Gabe Jackson, CB Keith McGill, RB James White, CB Antone Exum, WR Matt Hazel, FB Trey Millard

2013 – OT Justin Pugh, DT Johnathan Hankins, G Earl Watford, S Cooper Taylor, RB Andre Ellington, ILB Steve Beauharnais

2012 – DE Melvin Ingram, DT Kendall Reyes, TE Michael Egnew, TE Ladarius Green, G Johnnie Troutman, WR B.J. Cunningham, DE Trevor Guyton

2011 – RB Mark Ingram, DT Marvin Austin, T Joe Barksdale, TE Lee Smith, LB Markell Carter

2010 – DT D’Anthony Smith, WR Jacoby Ford, T Ed Wang, RB Deji Karim, OLB Dekoda Watson

While this list is missing some of the Bears current talent; Kyle Long, Alshon Jeffery, Eddie Goldman and Charles Leno; we certainly missed out on some high end talent; Leonard Willams and Aaron Donald.

But what we missed out on most, was having a roster with names such as Martrell Spaight, Jeremiah Attaochu, Steve Beauharnais, Johnnie Troutman, and Ed Wang.

So lift a glass to what coulda been.
