Chicago Bears re-sign WR/KR Deonte Thompson to a 1 year deal

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears have announced that they have agreed to bring back wide receiver/kick returner Deonte Thompson on a one year deal.

Thompson gave the Bears' kick return game a boost last year after taking over week 10. His 29.2 average on kick returns was the best in Chicago since Devin Hester's 35.6 in 2010. If Thompson had enough returns to qualify, he would have placed 2nd in the NFL in average. He had a long return of 74 yards last year and he also long reception of 45 yards. He only had 2 catches on the season for 81 yards, but he does have the kind of speed (4.31 40 at his 2012 pro day) that can stretch the defense if given more opportunities in the passing game.

Even though the new kickoff rule brings all touchbacks out to the 25 yard line, teams still need a threat back there to keep the opposition from pooching kicks to them. And if teams do try the mortar-style kickoff, Thompson has the kind of electric speed to make them pay.

What are your thoughts on Thompson returning to Chicago?
