Report: It's a "near certainty" that Alshon Jeffery will play out the franchise tag

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

It's looking more and more like there will be no long term deal reached between wide receiver Alshon Jeffery and the Chicago Bears. Jeffery, who was given the franchise tag earlier this year, has yet to show up for any of the voluntary offseason activities for the Bears in 2016. The first time he technically has to report will be at the June 14th - 16th mandatory minicamp, so if he skips that one too, we'll get a better indication on Jeffery's mood.

The latest twist in the story comes from the Chicago Tribune's Dan Wiederer who claims that "It's a near certainty Jeffery will play the 2016 season on the franchise tag."

This is probably best for both sides as it will give the Bears a chance to see if Jeffery can stay healthy for an entire season, proving that 2015 was a fluke, and it will allow Jeffery to prove his worth as a top flight receiver.

The Bears could tag Jeffery once more after the 2016 season, but I would imagine they'd have their minds made up about either a long term deal or letting him walk after his play this year.

What are your thoughts on the Alshon Jeffery situation?
