Late Friday afternoon the Chicago Bears announced via the NFL's transaction report that they have signed eight undrafted free agents.
Ben Braunecker, TE, Harvard - This guy was one of the most athletic tight ends at the NFL Combine. Don't believe me, check his combine page. I had him mocked to the Bears in the later rounds and most believed he would go in the 5th or 6th.
Dan Buchholz, C, Duquesne - I find it interesting the Bears had him at center in the transaction report since he played tackle in college.
Taveze Calhoun, DB, Mississippi State - He's another 6' corner that the Bears will try out, scouts rave about his intelligence.
Don Cherry, LB, Villanova - He'll probably compete at ILB for the Bears at 6'1", 236 pounds.
Derek Keaton, WR, Georgia Southern - Here's what EJ Snyder said about the 5'10" Keaton, "Had a terrific punt return average (PRA) of 15.3 yards, but did not find the endzone on a return during his college tenure."
John Kling, T, Buffalo - At 6'7", with a 7 foot wingspan, he has the nickname Kling Kong.
Roy Robertson-Harris, LB, Texas-El Paso - The Bears had him in for a visit the same day they met with Leonard Floyd. Most figured the athletic Robertson-Harris would be drafted.
Joe Sommers, TE, Wisconsin-Oshkosh - This D3 prospect could be a H-Back / fullback type.
The BearReport's Aaron Leming is reporting that Oklahoma State CB Kevin Peterson, Liberty WR Darrin Peterson and Texas State OL Adrian Bellard have also signed.
EDIT: Both Peterson's have been officially signed along with 7 of the Bears draft picks.
The Bears open rookie minicamp on Friday, May 13th and besides the UDFAs they've signed, there will be a number of rookies at the camp on a try out basis.
Do any of these guys stand out to you?
