I don't think there's anything more appropriate to put in the recap than this:
Soldier Field halftime show was a handful of dogs chasing frisbees with one dog relieving itself at the 50-yard line.— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) August 12, 2016
The defending Super Bowl champs got off on the right foot, with Mark Sanchez finding holes all throughout the Bears defense and lofting a strike to a wide open Demaryius Thomas as Bryce Callahan badly misplayed his coverage of Thomas. That was really all the Broncos needed as the Bears couldn't find any rhythm offensively, taking five sacks in the first half. The Broncos capped the first-half scoring on a blocked Pat O'Donnell punt returned for a touchdown, and the Broncos led 20-0 heading to the half.
The Bears' main offensive starters only got a couple of series, and Kevin White got his first reception on a quick little swing pass that he turned into a three-yard gain. Alshon Jeffery also picked up a 12-yard reception on the first offensive play of the game for the Bears, after nursing a hamstring injury during training camp. Jerrell Freeman snared himself an interception of Sanchez on a Bryce Callahan deflection, and a trio of linebackers from last year's squad (Sam Acho, Cornelius Washington, and John Timu) each notched sacks throughout the game.
There's not really much more to say about the first preseason game of the year, except that we're through the summer and camp, and the regular season is only about a month away. Bring it on. We'll see you with Notes in the morning.
