The Den will be taking a look at one of the Chicago Bears' 2017 unrestricted free agents (UFA's) and restricted free agents (RFA's) each day until we have knocked out the list.
I will be talking about the player, whether I personally would sign the player and to what contract, and what my best guess the Bears will do with him.
Today let’s discuss returner and backup wideout Deonte Thompson. Like many Bears, he had an up-and-down season. He showed off his blazing speed one minute, then made a costly mistake or drop the next.
Thompson will be a fifth year player, here’s a brief bio from the Chicago Bears website: Appeared in 21 games over four season with the Baltimore Ravens (2012-13), Buffalo Bills (2014) and Chicago Bears (2015), grabbing 17 receptions for 228 yards (13.4 avg)... Added 36 kickoff returns for 999 yards (27.8 avg)... Ranked 2nd in the NFL in kickoff return average in 2015, averaging 29.2 yards per return (minimum 10 returns).
Thompson is the only legitimate kick returner on the Bears roster, did he do enough to earn a spot on the 90-man roster?
My take: Absolutely, bring him back and let him compete for both the returner and bottom-end of the roster wideout. He’s cheap, he’s got speed and he’s shown improvement last season.
Do I think the Bears bring him back: Yes, for competition. I think he’s back on the 90-man, but that in no way guarantees him a spot on the 53-man week-one roster.
