Akeim Hicks is a Bad Man and the Chicago Bears midseason MVP

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

One day before the 2017 season started, the Chicago Bears gave Akeim Hicks a 4 year, $48 million contract extension with $30 million guaranteed. Hicks was still under contract for the 2017 season, but after playing near a Pro Bowl level in 2016, general manager Ryan Pace decided there was better football ahead for the 27-year old Hicks.

He was right.

Akiem Hicks has been the midseason MVP for the 2017 Chicago Bears.

Hicks came out against the Atlanta Falcons that first week and played like a guy still trying to prove himself. He chalked up a couple sacks in that game, and he’s upped his sack total to a career tying seven in only eight games so far.

Hicks has set the tone for the improved Bears defense this year, and his numbers just tell part of the story. His presence has made things easier for the other players on Chicago’s front seven. The extra attention Hicks has been getting has helped nose tackle Eddie Goldman already hit a career high 26 total tackles. When the Bears lost defensive captain Jerrell Freeman to an injury, Hicks was awarded the Captain’s C in his place.

He’s great against the run, but he’s giving the Bears a big push up the middle that really helps their edge rushers out as well. Quarterbacks have no where to run, and the Bears are seventh in the NFL in sacks.

Hicks is my pick for midseason Bears MVP, but now it’s your turn. Who do you think it should be?
