Over/under prediction: Bears Emery picks on final roster

How many of Phil Emery’s picks will be left in 2017?

The staff here at WCG have daily email chains where we plan out who is writing what for the day and when it will post and so on so that we aren’t posting on top of one another or duplicating efforts.

A nice side thing in the email is that we banter about Bears-related things and every so often that ends up being a post.

This is one of those times.

On Friday, after the news of Ego Ferguson getting waived broke, Josh Sunderbruch wondered in the email how many picks of former general manager Phil Emery would still be on the final 2017 53-man roster.

There are currently six Emery picks still under contract: Kyle Long, Will Sutton, Ka’Deem Carey, Pat O’Donnell, Kyle Fuller and Charles Leno Jr.

He set the over/under at 3.5 for the final roster number.

The overall number of Emery’s three drafts just six of 20 players he selected remain, which just shows part of the issue that current GM Ryan Pace inherited when he took the helm.

The Bears only have four of their own first round picks on the roster to boot.

As for the question at hand: would you take the over or the under of the players remaining?

Kyle Long will no doubt be on the opening day roster, having signed a contract extension and being entrenched on the starting offensive line. O’Donnell too would seem pretty safe, unless the team drafts another punter or brings in a bunch of try out players this offseason. Leno has been solid, if unspectacular at LT for the Bears but barring a draft pick seems to be set at his position.

So that’s three but do feel confident in taking the over?

Fuller showed so much promise but has fallen down the depth chart and faces competition from free agent signings Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper as well as returning guys such as Bryce Callahan, Deiondre Hall and Cre’Von LeBlanc, among others.

Sutton, who was originally drafted in ‘14 with Ferguson to plug up the middle of their 4-3 front, never really settled in and made an impact but he was a rotation piece at NT last season.

Carey has had his moments but if it weren’t for injuries to Jeremy Langford last season, Carey might have never been given a chance behind Jordan Howard. Plus Howard’s emergence made any carries hard to come by.

So will the Bears enter 2017 with at least four Emery picks still on the roster or will the Bears continue to distance themselves from the former regime and come in under?

Take the poll and then tell us in the comments.
