Chicago Bears Draftwatch - The "Bear Guys" List

Which players may have earned Chicago's ultimate seal of draft approval?

NCAA Football: Florida State at Florida Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

During a previous draft Ryan Pace mentioned that the Bears were using a small sticker with a bear on it to mark guys on their draft board who the team truly coveted. These weren't necessarily the consensus top players at a position but rather guys who "checked off every box" for Chicago during the evaluation process. In short, everybody in Halas Hall (General Manager, scouts, and coaches) was in agreement that the player would make a great Chicago Bear.

About a week ago someone asked me who I thought would get the stickers in this draft. It was a great question and it made me look at my scouting lists in a different way. Chicago has been very tight-lipped this draft season about their intention or preferences, so there is no way to verify who has the sticker or not. This is just a fun exercise to imagine who Chicago might really like on their board and why. I also tossed in some names of players the Bears might choose at the position, whether or not they got the coveted "Bear Guys" sticker.

The 2017 Bear Guys List

QB - (This is the biggest toss-up on the list. The Bears haven't really had "a type" at QB for a long time.) Mitch Trubisky - Accurate passer with enough arm talent to cut through the late season winds. Tough, smart, competitive and former Mr. Football in Ohio; he gets the midwestern FB ethic.

Who they might pick: Deshaun Watson, Deshone Kizer

RB - Christian McCaffrey - The best Bears backs in recent history (Thomas Jones and Matt Forte) were true all-around threats who could break big plays on the ground and through the air. McCaffrey is the best combo of both worlds in this draft.

Who they might pick: TJ Logan

Outside WR - Corey Davis - Chicago likes their WR's tough and able to block and Davis is both. He competes and is crazy productive.

Who they might pick: Chris Godwin or Josh Reynolds

Slot WR - 2 ways to go here; classic tough guy inside route runner (Tom Waddle) or speedster (Johnny Knox)

Zay Jones - There is nothing not to like about this player. He can play inside or outside on my team any day.

Who they might pick: Ryan Switzer or Ardarius Stewart

TE - OJ Howard - The Bears have a couple of Hall of Fame TE's (Hewitt and Ditka) but I'm sure they'd love a shot at another. Howard has it all.

Who they might pick: Jake Butt, George Kittle or Jeremy Sprinkle

OT - Antonio Garcia - A lot like Charles Leno.

Who they might pick: Julie'n Davenport - Huge guy with upside, not unlike Tayo Fabuluge from TCU

IOL - Dorian Johnson - Like a slightly more mentally (but less physically) developed Kyle Long (the Oregon version, not the current one)

Who they might pick: Ethan Pocic - Swiss Army knife that could play all 5 OL spots in a pinch

DT - (Tie) Jonathan Allen/Chris Wormley - Very high floor guys who are basically plug-and-play

Who they might pick: Dalvin Tomlinson, Nazair Jones, Jaleel Johnson

EDGE - Carl Lawson - Oh please let this happen

Who they might pick: Joe Mathis, Dawuane Smoot, Daeshon Hall

ILB - Jarrad Davis - Totally reminds me of a young Urlacher. Can crush a runner coming forward on one play and tip a pass away from a TE 20 yards down the seam on the next. Plays with violence.

Who they might pick: Kendell Beckwith, Jayon Brown (he's a Danny Trevathan [@ Kentucky] copy)

Boundary CB - Cordrea Tankersly - Big guy that fits their "length" mold at outside CB

Who they might pick: Rasul Douglas

Slot CB - Budda Baker - could absolutely handle this role and is such a "Bear Guy"

Who they might pick: Corn Elder, Damonte Kazee

SS - Josh Jones - size and hitting ability, can also rotate out and cover the deep slot.

Who they might pick: Delano Hill, Nathan Gerry

FS - Obi Melifonwu - It's not hype about his size and speed; he can play. He is active, hits very well and can go step-for-step down the boundary. He's a legit matchup weapon on D.

Who they might pick: Desmond King, Xavier Woods, David Jones

Who would get your sticker if you were the GM and were looking for everybody's buy-in?
