The final preseason game for the Chicago Bears is almost here. Tonight will see what might be Mitchell Trubisky’s last night on the field in quite some time, and it’s also going to see a lot action from players who might not be on rosters when the curtains open on the 2017 NFL regular season. That said, it’s a bit misleading to frame the game as one featuring only scrubs and never-will-bes.
Game 4 of preseason last year did not see any action from Connor Shaw (who went down in Game 3), and instead featured the passing games of Brian Hoyer and David Fales. Future Uber drivers were not exactly “featured” in the receiving game, as Kevin White, Cameron Meredith, and Jordan Howard led the way in terms of receptions and yards last year. Jordan Howard and Ka’Deem Carey combined for 23 carries this time last year.
On defense, a stronger case can be made that the Bears featured players looking to make their mark. Leonard Floyd saw only limited action, with the top tacklers instead being Christian Jones and DeAndre Houston-Carson (with a sack going to Sam Acho).
In short, even without the franchise’s quarterback of the future involved, Game 4 of the preseason actually does have the opportunity to show off some meaningful talent, even if there are going to be a number of marginal players on...well...the margins.
