Tanner Gentry clears waivers and returns to the Bears practice squad

NFL: Chicago Bears at Tennessee Titans Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Just moments ago, Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun Times, sent out the Tweet that Bears’ fans have been waiting for.

We can all breathe a little easier now, because Tanner Gentry is back on the practice squad of the Chicago Bears.

This means that he cleared the NFL waiver system and no other team was ready to give him a spot on their 53 man roster.

When Gentry was released yesterday, it was reported that they wanted him back, and lo and behold, here we are. The 6’2”, 210 pound undrafted free agent has returned to the franchise that gave him his first taste of NFL action.

He was a camp surprise and immediate fan favorite due to his knack for making the highlight reel grab in Bourbonnais.

His preseason 45 yard touchdown reception, from fellow rookie Mitchell Trubisky, prompted me to give the play the Xs&Os treatment here at WCG.

Gentry’s release yesterday probably means that free agent pick up Markus Wheaton is ready to play this Sunday. With a $6 million guaranteed investment in Wheaton, the Bears are hoping he can bring a big play ability to the offense.

With the injury bug seemingly attacking Chicago’s receiving corps, I’d imagine we haven’t seen the last of Tanner in the Navy and Orange this year.
