Ryan Pace is a machine. According to Emmanuel Acho, Sam Acho’s brother, the Chicago Bears are bringing back the veteran outside linebacker to a two-year deal worth $7.5 million, with $3 million guaranteed. This news has been confirmed by Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun Times.
Since joining the Bears in 2015, Sam has been a key contributor on Vic Fangio’s defense. He has appeared in 47 out of a possible 48 games, while starting in 25 of those games. 2017 was his most productive season as a Bear, registering 3.0 sacks, 45 combined tackles, and a pass defensed in 12 starts. This move follows up the re-signing of Prince Amukamara, as the Bears look for continuity on their defense.
For all the buzz that free agency brings, it appears that Pace is focused on keeping the core of his defense intact. As Vic Fangio mentioned in his presser following his retention as the defensive coordinator, he stressed the importance of improving from within, as opposed to simply adding more talent. Look for the Bears to continue adding depth to their inside and outside linebacker positions.
