Mocking the Mocks: The Chicago Bears get Denzel Ward in Todd McShay’s latest

Now that the NFL Combine is over we’re sure to get a bunch of new mock drafts to digest. Our very own Jacob Infante dropped a Chicago Bears’ seven rounder earlier this morning, and we wanted to look at a few more here today.

First up is the latest from ESPN’s Todd McShay, who has the Bears drafting Denzel Ward from Ohio State with the eighth overall selection. Before he tore up the NFL Combine he was the likely top corner on most teams boards, but after his work in Indianapolis that looks like a no-brainer now.

Here’s what McShay had to say.

Calvin Ridley is still my top-ranked WR, but he had a mixed combine workout. The Bears do need playmakers on the outside for second-year QB Mitchell Trubisky, but right now, there are simply too many higher-graded players on the board available. Even if Chicago keeps Kyle Fuller (it placed the transition tag on him), the Bears need a lockdown CB. Ward is that guy, and his blazing 4.32 40 cemented his spot as the No. 1 CB in this draft.

McShay did have Ridley still on his mock board, and he also had Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds from Virginia Tech still available.

NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah has the Bears going with Ward also and he dropped this interesting nugget about his pick, “Ward is the top cover man in the draft.”

8. Chicago Bears: Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech

The Bears are in a tough spot at No. 8. Keep an eye on a possible trade down with Miami that involves Miami wide out Jarvis Landry. If the Bears stick here, they could go after the huge upside of Edmunds, one of the more electric players in this year’s draft. Edmunds is a player who could line up opposite Leonard Floyd to play the run and drop in coverage.

Kadar has Ward going at nine to the 49ers, so take a peek at his mock and let us know if you like how his played out for the Bears.

The latest at CBS Sports has the Bears going in a similar direction.

Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech. Edmunds is a physical freak, even by combine standards. He’s only 19 years old and the Bears have other needs, but if they land a wide receiver in free agency Edmunds makes sense here.

USA Today dropped a new mock today and they’re in tune with Jacob’s mock.

8. Bears — Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame: Per Mayock, Barkley and Nelson are the two best players in a draft dominated by the quarterback conversation. Chicago has a Pro Bowl-sized hole on its O-line after declining G Josh Sitton’s option for 2018. Nelson will almost certainly be an upgrade, even when compared to an accomplished vet like Sitton, and has vowed to make a roomier pocket for his next quarterback, something Mitchell Trubisky would certainly appreciate in his second season.

I’d love Nelson on the Bears o-line, but I have a feeling he won’t make it to 8.

8) Chicago Bears: Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado State

Player analysis: Reminds me a bit of Corey Davis but not as explosive and minus the plethora of highlight-reel catches. Don’t get it twisted though. “Giddy up” is a smooth route runner with honey hands (sticky and sweet) and his run after the catch is stellar.

Fan reaction: We went to the Super Bowl with Sexy Rexy. Carson Wentz just helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl in Year 2! It’s our turn. Let’s go, Mitchapalooza!

Michael Gallup?

He had a good Senior Bowl and a nice combine, but there’s no way he’s going to be the top wide out picked. Someone should check Google to see if Tank is related to Michael.
