NCAA Football: CFP National Championship Game-Alabama vs Georgia Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

I was on the Shawn and Maya Show (WKTA Wheeling/Chicago 95.9FM/1330AM) earlier this morning — you can catch my segment on Facebook Live about the 1:00 mark — and they asked me which Chicago Bears’ rookie would have the biggest impact in 2018. I went with Roquan Smith, and Shawn was surprised by my answer. His surprise then surprised me. I figured most would go with Roquan, but the more I thought about I could see any of the top three draft picks being in the discussion.

Who do you think will make the biggest impact?

The Candidates

Roquan Smith - My guess is Smith starts at the Jack ILB spot, which gives him some freedom to makes plays if the blockers in front if him can keep him clean. Danny Trevathan will likely be the Mike backer, meaning he’ll usually line up on the strong side of the formation. Smith does have some issues if blockers can get to him, but he has the speed and more importantly, the instincts, to be a playmaker from day one.

James Daniels - I assumed the Bears picked him to play center, but Chicago’s initial plan seems to have him lining up at left guard. I honestly don’t care where the Bears play him or Cody Whitehair, as long as they leave them both alone and let them grow at their positions. Daniels has shown the ability to work off double team blocks and find the second level defenders, so I’m excited to see him line up in the Navy and Orange.

I wanted Quenton Nelson in the draft, but I’m completely fine with the Smith-Daniels combo at 1-2. Daniels will solidify the Bears line, and while he’s not as violent as Nelson, he’s a damn good football player.

Anthony Miller - If you haven’t looked up some Miller highlights yet, do it now. Like, right now. I’m sharing the Bears’ produced video below, but it’s only fifty seconds. He caught thirty-seven touchdown passes in his three year career at Memphis, so there were plenty of exciting plays to go gaga over.

I have a few reasons that I didn’t go with Miller as the rookie I expect the biggest impact from, and in no particular order here they are; Jordan Howard, Trey Burton, Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Tarik Cohen and Adam Shaheen. There’s only one ball for the offensive skill players to fight over, and Miller probably won’t be the first or second option in the passing game.

Who do you guys got?

One of these three or one of the other draft picks? Maybe you have high expectations for one of the undrafted free agents?
