The Chicago Bears will host a number of local players from surrounding high schools and colleges to their local workout day on April 13.

The latest name to leak is Park Forest, Illinois’ Nick Horne, a linebacker from Eastern Illinois and Rich East High School. Christian Shanafelt of the NFL Draft Bible was the first to report.

Horne wasn’t able to get any local colleges to host him for their pro day, but his film must have been enough for the Bears’ scouts to earn him an invite to Halas Hall.

Horne started his collegiate career at Division II Winona State as a safety before walking on at EIU where he converted to weak-side linebacker. He also earned a scholarship during his time as a Panther after his first year, and he made their All-Conference team as a senior.

According to his Twitter feed, Horne’s EIU stats are as follows; 178 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions. He started two games as a redshirt sophomore in 2015 and he was a full time starter the last two years. He was named a team captain in 2017.

He may be a little undersized to play linebacker in the NFL (6’2”, 227*), but with his safety background, he feels there’s a place for him if he can make an impression on a team. Horne told the Journal Gazette and Times Courier, “Especially now with the hybrid safety becoming very popular in the NFL, I feel I fit that position perfectly.”

He may be a long shot, but a good work out at the local pro day could lead to a contract as an undrafted free agent. Then once he makes a camp, who knows...
