This will be the shortest fanpost I have ever written. Fangio's departure was skillfully explained in the article Life without Fangio: Defensive coordinator options for the Bears by our own Robert Zeglinski. However, this is a fanpost to simply say, I don’t want any of those guys.
Don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t be disappointed with any of them. I just don’t think they are the best match for Nagy and the Bears organization. Instead, my choice would ignore current NFL coordinators all together.
My choice for DC is simple. Bob Shoop, the current DC for Mississippi State. Shoop was the 2014 NCAA Defensive Coordinator of the year and was a semi-finalist for the NCAA Coordinator of the Year award this year. His defensive units have been Top 25 in rankings in total defense in five out of the last seven years.
Mississippi State Defense in 2018
Allowed 8 passing TD's, 7 Rushing TD's, 2.87 yards per Rush, and averaged 3 Sacks and 7.92 Tackles for loss per game.
By comparison, Alabama's defense in 2018 averaged 3 Sacks and 7.13 Tackles for loss per game. The vaunted Clemson defense? Allowed 2.51 yards per Rush and 8 Rushing TD's while posting 9.07 Tackles for loss per game. But the best part of Shoops defense is the ball hawking defensive backfield. Mississippi State tallied 1 interception for every 30.62 passing attempts. For perspective, Alabama allowed 1:33.21 and Clemson 1:37.25.
Bring me Bob Shoop.
