Cairo Santos Named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Have the Bears found their kicker?

After going 3 for 3 on field goals against the Panthers Sunday, including an impressive 55 yarder, Cairo Santos has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week Six. Santos has been on a roll of late. He’s perfect since Week Four, and kicked a clutch game winner to fell Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Week Five.

After coming to the Bears as an injury fill in for presumed starter Eddie Pinero, Santos has been solid. He went 2 for 2 in Week one, before struggling a bit in Weeks Two and Three, going 1 for 2 in each. Since then, he’s been perfect and looking every bit the kicker he was before his injury in 2017, when the Brazilian born kicker was considered top 10 at his position with the Chiefs.

After the Chiefs released him, he played for several teams, but never quite looked right. This includes a stint with the Bears in 2017, replacing Connor Barth. That’s the funny thing about kickers. Injuries can linger, and it can sometimes take years for them to round back into shape, if they ever do at all. Santos, for his part, is looking like he’s finally back, and with the Bears recent struggles with the position (lest we forget the “incident”), it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Not to jinx anything, but the Bears may have finally found their kicker. It is, however, a tough break for Eddie Pinero, who for his part, has looked fairly solid in the role. Such is the life of an NFL kicker.
