David Carr thinks Cole Kmet has been the best rookie tight end in the National Football League in 2020.
Carr, the former Houston Texan quarterback (and brother to Raiders quarterback Derek Carr) chose Kmet to be one of his top offensive rookies in the NFL this week in his weekly column about the top offensive NFL players this week.
In choosing the Barrington, Illinois native Kmet, the first of Chicago’s two second round picks, Carr recognized that the pickings at tight end have been slim league wide.
“Tight end play has been down across the league this season,” writes Carr, “and the rookie class is no exception. I chose Kmet here because he’s had the biggest impact on his unit, narrowly edging Cleveland’s Harrison Bryant and New Orleans’ Adam Trautman. The Bears tight end had a slow start to the season but has emerged as a playmaker for Chicago down the stretch.”
Kmet, the rookie product out of Notre Dame, has indeed been picking up his game both statistically and in playing time over the last month.
The former Golden Dome tight end played all 64 offensive snaps last week against the Vikings, and although his passing production was limited to two early catches for 12 yards, he was instrumental along with the improved Bears offensive line in helping running back David Montgomery rush for a career-best 146 yards. Kmet’s road-grader block paved the way for one of Montgomery’s two touchdowns on the day.
For 2020, Kmet has 19 catches for 184 yards and two TD’s, but 90 of those yards and one of the touchdowns were gathered over the last three games as his playing time has been increased.
