The Chicago Bears have made a couple minor moves so far this weekend and until they get some extensions and restructures done, I’d expect more of the same. But if they find a way to clear some cap space they could land one more medium sized prize in free agency.
The back and forth between safety Tony Jefferson and Bears twitter has been interesting, but nothing from any Bears beat writers so far. The 28-year old made $4.6 million in 2019 and considering he’ll be coming off a knee injury, his 2020 asking price could be in bit lower than that.
The full list of transactions involving the Bears can be found below the second horizontal line, and for the latest buzz just keep reading as we’ll be updating this tracker all weekend long as news breaks and rumors swirl...
Head over to Monday’s tracker to keep up to date on the latest!
SUNDAY
10:05 PM: Ian Rapoport tweets that the Bears have signed outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo to a one year deal. (link)
10:26 AM: Adam Jahns tweets that the Bears are planning to re-work several contracts including one major extension to create cap space.
10:23 AM: The Bears have signed safety Jordan Lucas for 1-year, $1 million. (link)
10:00 AM: ESPN’s Field Yates has the Jimmy Graham contract details for his two-year, $16M deal with the Bears. Graham has a no trade clause, a guaranteed $3M base salary in 2020, a $6M signing bonus, and in 2021 has has a base of $6.9M, with a $100K workout bonus, and there are incentives to add a bit more.
9:56 AM: A little NFL Draft news as the Bears are showing interest in FIU QB James Morgan. (link) We had a previous write up on the Bears looking into Morgan here.
9:43 AM: The Buccaneers have restructured the contract for tight end Cameron Brate who was linked to the Bears if he would have been released. (link)
SATURDAY
5:57 PM: Offensive guard Greg Van Roten, whom the Bears were rumored to be interested in, has signed with the Jets. (link)
1:11 PM: The Bears are signing former first-round pick of the Steelers in 2016, cornerback Artie Burns. (link)
12:13 PM: Former Bears offensive lineman Eric Kush is signing with the Raiders.
12:07 PM: Allen Robinson responded to a tweet about his contract extension with a “cap” emoji followed by three exclamation points, and since I don’t speak fluent emoji I asked a few friends to decipher for me. James Fox, the Senior Editor at Future Sox, tells me it’s like “putting a cap on things,” and Dan DeYoung, a knowledgeable member of Bears Twitter and WCG member, tells me, “a more frequent way that the Gen Z people use it is throwing a ‘no cap’ at the beginning or end of a statement to replace ‘no lie.’”
A-Rob himself recently shared the urban dictionary definition that shows the meaning of cap to be, to lie or say something false.
