Mocking the Mocks: A roundup of recent Bears mock drafts

With free agency slowing down for the Chicago Bears, we wanted to jump back into some NFL Draft discussion for you guys by sharing some recent mock drafts.

In case you missed it, the NFL announced that the draft will still take place as scheduled, however the surrounding Las Vegas fanfare has been cancelled. The first round will still be on Thursday, April 23, with rounds 2-3 on Friday, April 24, followed by rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 25, but it will be a more laid back environment due to the current state of affairs in our country.

Not all of these mocks went a full seven rounds, but each gave a few new prospects for us Bears’ fans to contemplate. After checking out what these draftniks gave the Bears be sure to check out some other players that were available when they mocked their pick to the Bears and let us know if you like the direction they took.

First up, NFL.com’s Chad Reuter who went four rounds.

43) Grant Delpit, Safety, LSU

50) Brycen Hopkins, Tight End, Purdue

I like the idea of getting Delpit, as I think he’d have a shot at some playing time on defense as a rookie, and possibly wining the job opposite Eddie Jackson at some point.

I’m not so sure a second round tight end would be in the cards for the Bears now that they added Jimmy Graham. Penn State wide out K.J. Hamler goes off their board on the next pick and his speed would fit in nicely on the Bears.

CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson dropped a three-rounder and his included a trade for the Bears with the Patriots where New England receives Chicago’s pick at 50 with the Bears getting picks 87, 98 and 100.

Round 2 - Pick 11 (43) Jacob Eason, QB, Washington • JR • 6’6” / 231 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 39th

POSITION RANK - 5th

Same as last week for the same reasons: Is Mitchell Trubisky the answer? How about Nick Foles? No? Then why not take a chance on the strong-armed QB from Washington who would’ve likely been a first-rounder had he returned to school in 2020.

Getting a rookie quarterback on the team is a must, but I’m not sure the Bears would be looking for one in the second round, and if they do want one so early would Eason be the guy?

Round 3 - Pick 23 (87) Michael Ojemudia, CB, Iowa • SR • 6’1” / 200 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 104th

POSITION RANK - 14th

Chicago signed Artie Burns but he’s not the long-term answer at CB.

Round 3 - Pick 34 (98) Saahdiq Charles, OL, LSU • JR • 6’4” / 321 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 168th

POSITION RANK - 35th

Charles anchored the left tackle position at LSU and has the athleticism to be an NFL starter.

Round 3 - Pick 36 (100) Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota • SR • 6’1” / 206 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 81st

POSITION RANK - 13th

Johnson put up huge numbers at Minnesota but questions about his deep speed could see him slip to Day 3.

I think a trade back is definitely in the cards for Bears’ GM Ryan Pace and this haul would be a decent one. Of his three third round picks, my favorite is Charles because right now the Bears don’t have a swing tackle on the roster, and at the very least he’d be able to give the Bears depth as a rookie.

Last week CBS Sports put out a full seven round mock courtesy of Josh Edwards, and here’s how he had the Bears picking.

Round 2 - Pick 11 (43) Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama • SR • 6’1” / 205 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 28th

POSITION RANK - 4th

Chicago adds some length at the cornerback position in the absence of Prince Amukamara.

Diggs was an outstanding high school wide receiver, just like his big brother Stefon, but his size, athleticism, and skills makes him a candidate to start at corner as a rookie.

Round 2 - Pick 18 (50) Netane Muti, OL, Fresno State • JR • 6’3” / 315 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 62nd

POSITION RANK - 11th

Muti is a stud when healthy. His medical history is a bit scary, but he is the best interior offensive line prospect in this class when available.

If healthy he has plenty of upside, but a couple Achilles injuries plus a Lisfranc (foot) injury makes him a gamble.

Round 5 - Pick 17 (163) Devin Asiasi, TE, UCLA • SR • 6’3” / 257 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 158th

POSITION RANK - 11th

Asiasi was a bit of a surprising early draft declaration but he is a balanced tight end for a franchise that is clearly desperate to solve that position.

The Graham signing takes tight end away as a need position, but Asiasi does project to the Y position, so maybe a year as a reserve would help him work on his skills.

Round 6 - Pick 17 (196) Quintez Cephus, WR, Wisconsin • JR • 6’1” / 202 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 197th

POSITION RANK - 30th

Cephus is a really productive player. Jeff Okudah called Cephus his toughest assignment last season.

I’ve seen Cephus mocked to the Bears a couple times now, and I’m not sure he’s the best fit. I’d rather the Bears look for a legit speed guy.

Round 6 - Pick 21 (200) Brian Cole II, S, Mississippi State • SR • 6’2” / 213 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 163rd

POSITION RANK - 13th

Chicago has a couple solid safeties but the team is looking for depth and value at this point in the weekend.

Round 7 - Pick 12 (226) Kamal Martin, LB, Minnesota • SR • 6’3” / 240 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 214th

POSITION RANK - 18th

Chicago lost Nick Kwiatkoski in free agency so this helps fill out depth.

Round 7 - Pick 19 (233) McTelvin Agim, DL, Arkansas • SR • 6’3” / 309 LBS

PROSPECT RANK - 212th

POSITION RANK - 20th

Agim is a big body that does not sacrifice burst. Depth play for the Bears.

Luke Easterling of the Draft Wire has a four round mock and here are his Bears picks.

43. Chicago Bears (from LV) | Cole Kmet | TE | Notre Dame

50. Chicago Bears | Damon Arnette | CB | Ohio State

We’ve discussed Kmet quite a bit on WCG, but not so much with Arnette. Ohio State played him both outside and matched up in the slot during his four years as a Buckeye, and he has the physical nature to compete for playing time as a rookie.

The Draft Network’s Joe Marino had the Bears sticking to the secondary in his recent three-round mock, and I think both these guys could be eventual starters.

43. Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama

50. Kyle Dugger, S, Lenoir-Rhyne

Dugger may be a small school prospect, but he impressed at the Senior Bowl and proved he belonged with the higher grade of competition.
