Can I be honest here for a second?
I don’t give a damn who is playing quarterback for my favorite team as long as my favorite team is winning football games.
For as long as I can remember, fans have argued over the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, even long before social media placed that argument in the spotlight.
The latest Chicago QB1 vs. QB2 match-up is Nick Foles vs. Mitchell Trubisky, and at today’s press conference both head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace called it an open competition. I don’t completely buy that, as I feel Mitch will start as the number one as the incumbent, but will eventually give way to the more cerebral player in Foles.
But if that doesn’t happen then so be it.
I’ll still cheer number 10 as much as I’ll cheer number 9.
This Team-Mitch or Team-Nick stuff is silly as we should all be Team-Bears.
From Jim McMahon or Mike Tomczak, to Erik Kramer or Steve Walsh, to Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton, to Jay Cutler or Josh McCown, to Trubisky or Foles, to countless other “battles” in between, fans seem to lock onto their guy and defend them against all comers. The other quarterback is often the one fans prefer, because he’s not the one not screwing things up at the time.
I may have had my favorite players through the years — I was a McMahon guy, an Orton guy, and a Cutler guy — but ultimately I’m cheering the Navy and Orange and not the specific number on the back of the jersey.
After watching Trubisky take a step back in 2019, I feel Foles gives Chicago their best chance to win in 2020, and I feel Bears’ brass has the same notion (otherwise why send a 4th-rounder to the Jags), but if somehow Trubisky has it “click” and he puts a stranglehold on the QB1 job in camp, then so be it.
May the best man win.
