We’re going to have some fun the next few days as we participate in SB Nation’s Video Game Theme Week. The mother-ship is running a Best Video Game of All-Time tournament, we have a round table discussion that we’ll get kicked off in the next day or two, but in the meantime, we want you video gamers to let us know who you think is the best Chicago Bears “character” of all-time.
I get that in the hands of an expert gamer, several Bears’ players can be deadly, but I want to know which player character would thrive even with a newb picking up the controller.
Here’s are the top three candidates...
Walter Payton - Tecmo Bowl
That clip isn’t the sexiest, but understand that to anyone that played with the Bears back in the early years on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sweetness was the man. He was one of the fastest players in the game, and he was nearly unstoppable in the Bears offense as both a runner and on a pass to the flat from Jim McMahon.
Devin Hester - Madden
Hester’s video game appearances started when he was a Miami Hurricane in NCAA 2005, but it was when he became an All-Pro in the NFL with the Bears when his gaming star shined brightest. In the video above the Chicago portion of his career pops up at the 2:17 mark. He was the first player in the history of the Madden franchise to be awarded a 100 speed rating.
Brain Urlacher - NFL Street
I couldn’t find any ‘Lach-specific clips from his time in NFL Street, but this Bears vs. Packers demo game has some of his highlights. NFL Street was an arcade style game where the players went both ways, but Urlacher’s overall athleticism let him fit right in.
We posed this question over on Twitter and it was a two man race.

Honorable mention: Mike Singletary and Dennis Gentry in Tecmo Bowl, Charles Tillman in NFL Street, Brad Muster and Neal Anderson in Tecmo Super Bowl, Walter Payton in the original John Madden Football in 1988, and Roberto Garza for being the only Bears’ player to make a cover (he was the cover athlete in the Spanish language version of Madden 2009).
