Video Game week rolls on for us at SB Nation and after sticking to football with our round table question to our staff yesterday (What is your favorite football video game of all time?) we opened things up to sports in general with this one.
What is your favorite non-football sports video game of all time?
For me this is an easy one, but since my pick is “sports entertainment,” I’ll give a second selection for the non-wrestling fans out there.
WWF No Mercy for the Nintendo 64 (N64) was a classic, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention WCW/NWO Revenge, WCW vs. NWO: World Tour, and WWF WrestleMania 2000 which all came before No Mercy, but were all made by THQ/AKI. I probably played the three of those games more than No Mercy, but No Mercy was one of the last N64 games made for the system and THQ/AKI perfected it. It had a good story mode, customization, and an easy — but not too easy — playability.
But my favorite non-wrestling, non-football sports game had to be Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was one of the first games I played that tracked all the stats, and I stuck with it over the more popular, and MLB licensed, R.B.I. Baseball.
Now let’s check in on what some of our guys had to say...
“The NHL games — while FIFA is obviously fun for billions of players around the world, I’ve always enjoyed the fast-paced, hard-hitting action that hockey (and it’s videogames) provide. Rocket League could technically have fit into this category as well, but I’ll stick with traditional sports games and go with hockey.” ~ Robert Schmitz
Speaking of hockey games, this clip from Swingers is an all-time classic. (Clip is rated R, so click at your own risk!)
“MLB Slugfest... From being able to start random fights to the outrageous yet awesome flaming graphics, it was a game I thoroughly enjoyed playing as a young teenager.” ~ Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter
“Forza Motorsport... If you’re into collecting, then Forza is for you.“ ~ Jack Salo
“This is far from the most conventional pick out there, but I’d have to go with MLB Power Pros 2008 on the Wii. It’s a cartoony game from a graphics and gameplay standpoint, but it’s a surprisingly elaborate game that’s fun any time you play it. There’s an MLB Life mode which is essentially a superstar mode on steroids. In addition to playing games and training to improve your attributes, you can buy houses and cars, develop hobbies, get married and have kids - I haven’t seen any game match that level of in-depth gameplay. There’s also a story mode where you work your way through the minors, a season mode with intricate management methods, optional fantasy draft feature, and more. Also, shoutout to Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 for the XBOX 360 - it may not be a true “sports” game, but GM Mode is as fun as any feature in any other sports game.” ~ Jacob Infante
“Pong... It’s a tennis sports game, right? I played it once in 1977. It amused me for a minute. Perhaps even two.” ~ Ken Mitchell
Ken doesn’t do video games, “at all,” so I was impressed he pulled out a Pong reference, and for those of you that don;t know what Pong was, enjoy this classic clip.
“NBA Live ’95... Again, yes, I’m that old. It’s possible that I never lost a game of NBA Live ’95. My three-point game was unstoppable. I still remember the time I dropped 62 points on my high school buddy with Felton Spencer. Good times.” ~ Bill Zimmerman
“Super Batter Up (SNES)... My brother and I played so many games of that after school.” ~ Steven Schweickert
And as an FYI, Steven is our resident video gamer, so be sure to check out his Twitch channel.
“Car racing is a sport. By that very definition, Mario Kart is the greatest sports video game of all-time. Get behind the wheel as Yoshi, blue shell your friend, who has no imagination, playing as Mario right before the finish line, and laugh the night away.” ~ Robert Zeglinski
“I will concede that Beerio Kart was a favorite pastime for me and my fraternity brothers during college.” ~ Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter
Now it’s your turn, what was your favorite non-football sports video game of all time?
