Bears sign Cairo Santos to the active roster, waive Eric Saubert

The Chicago Bears announced that they have signed kicker Cairo Santos to the active roster from the practice squad, and in a corresponding roster move they have released back-up tight end Eric Saubert.

Santos was also active a week ago when the Bears called him up to replace Eddy Pineiro, whom was placed on injured reserve before the season started.

With the new 55-man roster limit in place for game day, teams can activate 2 additional players from the practice squad, but after the game they revert back to the practice squad. Teams can only do this with a player twice per season. The Bears cut a player to make room for Santos this week, so if they need to do another kicker shuffle with him later in the year they have one more to play with.

With Saubert’s experience in the third phase, and his ability to back up at both tight end spots, I would expect him to be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Chicago will have another roster decision to make next week when defensive back Marqui Christian is eligible to return from his 2-game suspension.
