The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs is reporting that the Chicago Bears are hiring Bill McGovern as their new inside linebackers coach.

EDIT: The team officially announced the hire on Friday.

McGovern was a defensive assistant last year for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but he spent the previous seven years coaching linebackers with the Eagles and the Giants.

Before making the jump to the NFL he had been coaching in the college ranks since 1985.

Here’s McGovern’s full coaching resume.

  • University of Nebraska, 2020: Defensive analyst
  • New York Giants, 2016–2019: Linebackers coach
  • Philadelphia Eagles, 2013–2015: Outside linebackers coach
  • Boston College, 2000–2012: Defensive coordinator/Linebackers coach
  • University of Pittsburgh, 1997–1999: Defensive backs coach
  • Boston College, 1994–1996: Defensive backs coach
  • University of Massachusetts, 1993: Defensive Coordinator

  • University of Massachusetts, 1988–1990: Defensive backs coach
  • Holy Cross, 1986–1987: Assistant defensive backs coach
  • University of Pennsylvania, 1985: Freshman coach

When McGovern was Boston College’s defensive coordinator in 2012, he coached on staff with current Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai, who was B.C.’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator that year.

Earlier today the Bears announced the hiring of Chris Rumph as defensive line coach.

The Bears now have openings at outside linebackers coach, safeties coach, running back coach, and passing game coordinator.
