In the few years we’ve been doing these SB Nation Reacts surveys there’s been one constant. When the Chicago Bears win, the fan confidence in the franchise moves up, and when they lose the confidence level drops. The amount always varies based on the way the team wins or loses, but the direction is always the same.
But not this week.
That embarrassing and one-sided loss to the Buccaneers two weeks ago caused our fan’s confidence to fall from 42% to 18%, but last Sunday’s loss to the 49ers, which was Chicago’s third consecutive defeat, and the confidence we have in our favorite team actually moved up a point to 19%.
Last Sunday the Bears lost by 11 at home, 33 to 22, but this loss featured several wow moments from rookie quarterback Justin Fields, and that’s the most important thing right now for the franchise.
His fourth down run for a touchdown was a thing of beauty, but he totaled 103 yards on the ground — the first 100 yard rushing game from a Bears QB since Bobby Douglass did it in 1973 — and he completed 70% of his passes in a variety of ways. He threw with touch and velocity, he was decisive, but most importantly he showed the flash we’ve all been waiting for.
I want the Bears to win as much as most of our fans, but this season is really all about the progression from Fields. He’s taking his lumps for sure, and he’s making mistakes, but he’s also growing as a quarterback.
Poll
Are you okay with the Bears losing as long as Justin Fields is making strides in his development?
