So the Bears got Andy Dalton. Not great, not great at all... but you know who is great? 28-straight-kicking, franchise-accuracy-record-setting kicker Cairo Santos!
What originally started out as a Saturday Evening project to burn time actually turned into a fun research project as I dove into Santos and the Chicago Bears’ intertwined kicking fates — both Bears fans and Santos himself have endured crushing disappointments since 2016, but Santos battled through all of it (and two early-season misses) to provide a solution to a position the Bears could really use a long-term answer at.
With Santos’ extension coming in right around 3 years for 8 million dollars (per OverTheCap.com), the Bears might as well have given Santos a one-year deal with two team options afterwards — it’s a very team-friendly contract that refunds 66% of next year’s total cap cost (a paltry $3 million, ~16th in kicker salaries) should he fail to deliver in 2022, though the deal works best for everyone if Santos just keeps swingin’.
